These are competition spacecraft for the X-Prize competition created by Burt Rutan and his Scaled Composites corporation. They recently set the record as the first private manned space flight and won the $10 million prize for the competition. Since then the concept has been purchased by Virgin and Rutan will be creating a 7 passenger concept for commercial space flights. At the current moment, you can purchase advance tickets for these flights at $200,000 a piece. The start of commercial service is slated for 2008.

White Knight is a Burt Rutan creation designed to carry Spaceship One to a determined hight for sub-orbital space missions. Both were designed to compete for the Ansari Space X prize ($10,000,000) which they won. The White Knight drops SpaceShip One and the then SpaceShip One ignites a rocket engine to climb to a sub orbital attitude and is actually in space. Notable since it was the first civillian manned spaceflight.

Explain Whiteknight & Spaceship 1..What are they

Hawk21M-

What planet have you been on...??? That was HUGE news in the aviation comunity last fall. It's been all over the television and I 'think' it was Discovery Channel did a great multi part series on it.

It was all over Mil av & space at the time as well:

I think MEL is just trying to ask as many questions as he can without using a question mark. Some kind of bet he's trying to win.......

I just saw the last flight of them in OSH... nice aircraft indeed. it looks and sounds like they put old DC-9 engines on White knight.

The engines are J-85's, the engine used by the T-38 trainer.

Well it is absolutely an overwhelming sight to see this thing fly. I remember hearing the sound of the engines approaching from behind the trees, so I start looking into the viewfinder and as it comes over the trees I had to put my camera down for a sec or 2 because I could not believe my eyes.

Haha i was there as well! Which days did u go? missed the final takeoff though,  Sad i did however see a harrier do it's thing, along with seeing patty do hers  Wink
WhiteKnight/Spaceship1 and globalflyer were inseperable at EAA, along with Richard Branson there, i took some pics but used film so it'll take ahwile to see the result.
One thing's for sure, global flyer is EXTREMELY quiet, doing a flyby at over 120knots you couldnt hear it coming, only when it passed there was a creepy hum of that williams engine,
Back to topic, Spaceship 1 is a pioneer, like Apollo. It represents the coming of age of the commericial 'galatic' enterprise. Make no mistake though, people were predicting we'd live on the moon by 1998, and im guessing we're 7 years past that? ISS is incomplete, shuttle program in ruins, funding cuts to nasa (at least on the aeronautical side). Government never moves as fast as the private sector, but it'll still be awhile before the average joe flies into space either for fun or for speed.
Now you're really flying

More like Mercury, or more aptly, a commercial X-15.

Government also opens doors that would otherwise be prohibitive for private industry. What the U.S. funded via NASA in the 50s, 60s, and 70s made what Burt Rutan did today possible.

Well, I think a lot commercial investment by other companies also helped. I doubt SpaceshipOne would not have been possible without, for example, silicon microprocessors hundreds of times more powerful and more compact than the computers and controllers used on previous NASA missions. And we can thank some guys from AT&T for inventing the transistor and making that possible.

TedTAce:

Everything I see says J-85's. GlobalFlyer used a single Williams.
