Space Shuttle: Ever Landed At White Sands?

Tue Aug 09, 2005 2:11 am

In connection with the current STS 114 it is mentioned in the media that in case the Space Shuttle cannot land in Florida it might divert to either Edwards AFB or "New Mexico" which should be "White Sands Space Harbour".

Though I know, that the Space Shuttle has made several landings at EDW, I cannot recall any landings at White Sands ...
Has any Space Shuttle ever made a landing at White Sands Space Harbour ?

Columbia landed there at the conclusion of STS-3 30 Mar 82. The dry lake at Edwards was flooded by heavy rains. That's the only time White Sands has been used.

IIRC the strip at White Sands is also some kind of dry lake bed. Apparently the dust there is very fine and got into the nooks and cranies of the spacecraft.

You're welcome...

The NASA White Sands website even has a page dedicated to the event. They had a problem after the landing due to a dust storm kicking up all that fine sand. Apparently the sand got into all kinds of places it shouldn't have..

Just an addendum; the Shuttle has made a bit more than "several" landings at Edwards. This morning's was the 50th landing there. Regards...Jack

Remember in the movie "Space Camp" they talked about landing in that place called White Plains. Then someone says "No, thats in New York, it's White Sands, they had to land there once"

LOL Smile Why do I remember that, let alone what a dumb movie that was??
