Usaf Tail Numbering/Olds F-4

Thu Aug 25, 2005 1:51 pm

Before you hop on me about how the numbering works. I know the first and smaller number is the year for the contract the aircraft was bought under. Or something to that effect.

However, I was wandering around the USAF Museum (The new, silly name escapes me). While staring at the F-4 of Col. Olds, I noticed the Tail number started with 40. Was the F-4 Phatom our secret weapon of WWII Big grin or was a different numbering convention used whenever this particular F-4 was ordered?

Anyone?

The offending number:

For whatever reason, the USAF doesn't actually paint the first number of the serial number on the airplane. To figure out the full serial number, you have to guess at the decade the airplane was funded in. Guessing that this Phantom was funded in the 1960s, you arrive at the serial number of 64-0829. As a check, take a look at: http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/1964.html

OK... Thanks for the heads up on the numbering. I will now insert my foot in my mouth.

Don't choke on your foot. The Air Force has several variations to the numbers scheme. I have started to catalog anomalies in my image collection.

It shouldn't be difficult. As all the F-4Cs were built in 1964-1966. The F-4D started in later 1966-1969.
