FRA: Air Force Base

Sat Sep 03, 2005 10:12 pm

Can somebody try and answer these questions:

1. What happens there.
2. Where will the USAF go when they stop using FRA.
3. What is going to be built on the site.

And the was an article in a magazine called 'Airports of the World' saying:

Frankfurt, Germany has received Hesse Administrative High Court approval to proceed with the construction of a planned A380 maintenance facility for Lufthansa on the southern side of the airport. Site clearance will begin shortly.

4. Where abouts do they mean it will go.

It happened already. Part of the airbase which basically was the southern part of Rhein-Main Airport was turned over to Fraport a couple of years ago and the new Cargo City South plus some Maintenance Hangars have been built on this site.

The Air Force officily turns the site over to Fraport Dec 31,2005.

All operations willmove to Ramstein AB and Spangdahlem AB, in fact a lot of traffic has moved already, the number of C17's or C5's on the tarmac is dwindling.

A new Terminal /T3) will be build on the site, increasing the capacity of the airport to approximately 85 Million p/a.

The A380 is not yet on dry grounds but highly likely to happen. It will be on the southern side of the airport, at the western end of the 2 parallel runways and close to the diagonal runway..

The USAF has already started moving operations to Ramstein AB with overflow going to Spangdalhem. I was at Ramstein last month and the new runway has been completed (not opened) and they were finishing up work on the new parking ramp. I believe all airfield projects are expected to be completed by 01 Oct. Which coincides with EDDF closing its doors.

Is the new runway parallel to the current one? By the way, do they still have the hardened aircraft shelters on the other side of the field?

Any photos of the new hangars and Cargo City South etc on A.net.

Also of the new ramp and runway at Ramstein AB.

Couldn´t find any, but came across this one taken at RMS (a bit off-topic, but atleast it shows a part of the old runway):

That's a negative on both questions. The new runway is roughly 20 or so degrees off counterclockwise so the base can fly 24 hour ops. (Currently they have quiet hours b/c the approach path is directly over K-town.) Most of the hardened shelters have been demolished though I'm not sure what, if anything, will go on that side of the runway.

Tom, that building is where the commercial contract airliners (ie, world airways DC-10s, MD-11s, etc) on the old patriot express and other rotators to or from the desert park at. It's alot easier to keep the herd from wandering over to graze in the grass when they've only got one place to go.

Funny. I thought I was speaking in english. Here's a translation for you; try to keep up:

It's alot easier (less work for those who work in the terminal) to keep the herd (the hundreds of people onboard those planes) from wandering over to graze (smoke, bullshit, urinate, vomit) in the grass (someplace they're not supposed to be, like the flightline) when they've only got one place to go (the jetway to the terminal).

Well, ... no problem. The sense of it made it at least into my humble, non native-english mind ... Even though a very flowery description why even the USAF uses boarding bridges at their bigger bases ...

I have heard on A.net, they have stoped ops and flight at EDDF.

Is this correct.

Tom.

Yes, that is correct. See this thread: Rhein-Main Air Base Closure (by PanAmerican Sep 27 2005 in Military Aviation & Space Flight)

At least there will hopefully be some nice looking buildings, being built in place of the AB.

A couple of people beat me to it but that was the AMC terminal. Basicly if World, Tower or somebody else was doing a military charter, that is the terminal they would use.

Had to drop somebody off there back in the day.
