  • Crimson Tide
  • Flight Of The Intruder
  • Full Metal Jacket
  • The Cain Mutany
  • Good Morning Vietnam
  • Top Gun
  • The Enemy Below
  • The Final Countdown
Your second list is limited to only three military movies, and they must have airplanes in them. yes

Mine are...
  • A Gathering Of Eagles

I hope this topic won't be too much of a brain buster for ya'll,  wave

Well ok, though this really belongs in polls and preferences....

List #1, no particular order...

Midway: "You Sank My Battleship!!", er, carrier....
Tora, Tora, Tora: Shazam! You're not a T-6 anymore!! You're a Zeke!!
Patton: Taking on a He-111 with a .45 has to be seen to be believed.  Smile
The Longest Day: Your basic Epic with the original all star cast
Battle of the Bulge: One word: Nuts!!
A Bridge Too Far: Scheisse!! C-47s, Wacos, and Horsas blackened the sky. Airborne!!
Saving Private Ryan: Worth it just to hear Gen Marshall read Pres. Lincolns letter
Band of Brothers: Excellent portrayal of the Greatest Generation
Memphis Belle: Look at all the B-17s, even if they are just cutouts...
The Bridge On The River Kwai: Duty, Honor, Country can backfire if you're not careful
The Green Berets: Who are ya? Green Berets!! How Far? All the way!!

Aviation flicks...
Strategic Air Command: LOTS of USAF assistance on this flick, if they had SmelloVision you could have smelled LeMays cigars, the oil dripping from the B-36s, and the half burnt kerosene from the B-47s!!. Even cast a real USAF pilot, Jimmy Stewart, in the lead role.
12 O'Clock High: More B-17s!!. Real ones this time, no cutouts. Everyday turned on which way Toby was facing.... They intentionally wrecked a B-17 at the beginning of this flick...
Bridges Of Toko Ri: A good way to get a dose of early Navy jets. Mickey Rooney with the original eggbeater is hard to beat too. BTW: Mick has been making movies since 1926 and he's still working. DAMM!
"There’s nothing quite as exhilarating as being shot at and missed" --Winston Churchill

Top ten war/military movies in no order:

1. The Great Escape
2. Twelve O'Clock High
3. In Harm's Way
4. Bridge on the River Kwai "Be happy in your work!"
5. A Midnight Clear
6. Winds of War / War and Remembrance (just bought the DVDs)
7. The Sand Pebbles
8. The Enemy Below
9. To Hell and Back
10. The War Lover

Top three for airplanes in no order:

1. Stategic Air Command (love that B-36)
2. The Blue Max (saw it in Savannah during primary flight training)
3. Thunderbolt / Memphis Belle - the William Wyler documentaries

Honorable mention:

"Apocalypse Now and for the next four hours." Had some personal reaction the first time I watched this. Ask my wife! I think the tension of the scene when they searched the sampan was one of the most realistic war scenes ever filmed. But that may just be personal response.
[insert "thousand-yard stare" smilie]

Tomorrow some of my answers might be different.

1: I also cite the German title as I do not necessarily know the original name, although the first three movies are German, anyway.

1.Das Boot (a must, best war movie ever, especially the 6 hour version!)
2. Die Brücke
3. Der Untergang (US title Downfall, one of the best movies ever)
4. Schlacht um Midway (Battle for Midway, don't know the original title)
5. Apocalypse now!
6. One bridge too far
7. The Battle of Britain (Luftschlacht um England)
8. All quiet on the western front remake (Im Westen nichts neues)
9. All quiet on the western front original (Im Westen nichts neues)
10. The thin red line (Der schmale Grat)
11. The deer hunter
12. Crimson tide

I hate: Saving Private Ryan (shocking, but somehow not convincing me), Pearl Harbour (bashing it would take too long), Band of Brothers. Generally I dislike movies which include too much patriotism. War is no fun, so these movies should be objective and show the bad sides of war. Yet I still like the battle of midway, because there are so many aircraft carriers...

2:
1. Stählerner Adler 2 (I do not know the original name, it is an Italian movie and shows a lot of F-104 pilots). The movie is lame, but there are lots of flying Starfighters!
2. Battle of Britain
3. Top Gun (a lot of funny mistakes, but great aerial shots)

Oh man, I was just in that forum before I looked in here, it never dawned on me to post it there, talk about a brain fart. embarrassed

Great list's, I'll have to stop by the video store tomorrow and see if they have any of these movies to rent.

Kelly's Heroes

In random order (how could I choose?):
Code Name: Wild Geese
The Lighthorsemen
The Caine Mutiny
A Bridge too Far
The Final Option/ Who Dares Wins-(I saw this once & have never found a copy of it)
Heartbreak Ridge
The Hunt for Red October
The Beast- opening scene looks like they actually wiped out a town with tanks
Das Boot
Run Silent Run Deep

Aviation War Movies:
The Final Countdown
Dr Strangelove
Tora! Tora! Tora!

Honorable mention to Dog Soldiers, but I wasn't sure if fighting werewolves would qualify as a war movie.
Ask me next week & I'll probably pick a whole different set of movies, but they would never include Pearl Harbour- what a rip-off that was!
Can you hear me now?

I've got the first on DVD, saw the 2nd on tv. My favourite part is the "Doug Masters was the greatest fighter pilot in the world, but he got snuffed in a dogfight" thing. That & the F-4 "MiGs". I've still seen worse though!
I shoulda had Apocalypse in there somewhere, that flic has a high density of all time classic lines.

I remembered that, and fell off my chair laughing. It was so funny. However, I have also seen another movie where F-16s were MIGs Big grin . Still better than having German soldiers using US weapons in crappy WW2 movies. On the other hand, I love movies that are really trying to be accurate.

- Gettysburg (Civil War, yes, but just as cool)
- U 571
- Heartbreak Ridge (definately one of my favorites)
- We were Soldiers (good shots of choppers going to the LZ)
- The Longest Day
- Patton
- In Harm's Way

- Sands of Iwo Jima
- To Hell and Back

Top 3 Aviation Flicks:

- 12 O' Clock High
- Tora Tora Tora
- Flying Leathernecks

I could think of others, but these I liked for certain aspects which may or may not include historical accuracy.

"Do you know what the man is saying? Do you? This is dialectics. It's very simple dialectics. One through nine, no maybes, no supposes, no fractions. You can't travel in space, you can't go out into space, you know, without, like, you know, with fractions. What are you going to land on, one quarter, three-eighths, what are you going to do when you go from here to Venus or something -- that's dialectic physics, OK? Dialectic logic is there's only love and hate, you either love somebody or you hate them."

Love that quote, little long, but good.
