Very sad indeed for all involved, and their families.

My second thought was "please, not the other Saha Air 707...." - I hope to take that trip sometime soon.

R.I.P

The C-130 would have been quite old, right?

Apparently, the crashed aircraft is a C-130 from the Iran Air Force.
They were delivered to Iran well before the Revolution, so they are more than 25 years old.

The plane crashed on a 10 floors building, in the suburb of Yaftabad, located south of Mehrabad Airport, serving Tehran. It was operating a flight to Bandar-Abbas.
The airport itself is located south west of the city center but is now completely surrounded by residential "new" suburbs.

I have heard that these are the older variants and are converted with seats inside(nodoubt not safe) and used to ferry families of the armed forces for almost nothing.

A bit more news from ABC Newsradio:-

1. All on board believed killed. The passengers were mainly photographers/journalists going to cover a military exercise at Bandar Abbas.

2. Ground casualties believed to be 'light' - about 90 people taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

3. The pilot declared an emergency but gave no other details. He began turning back to the airport but the crash occurred immediately afterwards.

4. Local officials are indicating that further crashes 'cannot be ruled out' as US sanctions prohibit Iran from purchasing aircraft spares.

Does anyone know what time of day it was when it happened. I hope there wasnt too many people at home.

From the picture on the BBC it looks like the impact was on the ground floor which might have trapped people in the building.
Totally horrifying!
Sad condolences.

2.30 in the afternoon, YAK42. Probably the 'best' time (if there is such a thing) - most people out at work and the kids still at school. Thanks for the photograph, looks like the aircraft didn't hit the building squarely, thank God........

That is atrocious! Not only because they have clearly faked the photo to the detriment of Airbus, but also because they are prepared to show an inaccurate picture like this to provide sensationalism....

C-130 Crash In Tehran

Wed Dec 07, 2005 4:56 am

I just read a news report that due to that day's high smog level in Tehran a large number of school kids had stayed home and were in the flats at the time of the crash. Had to be a full load of fuel to fly to Bandar-e Abbas. No matter the side of the fence you are on, this is heart wrenching. RIP to the souls lost. Gus.

I have just had to clean up a lot of off-topic posts from this thread, which has been moved from the Civil Aviation forum.

Given that too many users seem to lack the maturity to discuss the issue without turning it into an all out flamefest, I am going to ask that this thread be used very strictly for discussion of the accident. Please DO NOT post about the issue of sanctions, or the government policies of the USA, Iran, or any other country. Given this accident is still very recent, I am sure you would all agree that it is a bit too early to be trying to assign cause just yet, anyway.

If anyone decides to ignore the above advice, and tries to restart the off-topic political banter, they will find themselves suspended, no questions asked. That goes for everyone who takes part in it. You have been warned.

austrian news mentiones that one of the victims called his wife telling her that the pilot refused to take off due to technical problems. a military representative denied rumours about technical problems prior to the start, other sources (not specified) say the plane took off late due to repairs prior to the start.
