Australia Possibly To Purchase C-17

Fri Dec 16, 2005 7:04 am

Hi All,

I just noticed the thread: End Of The Line For The C-17? (by Lumberton Nov 4 2005 in Military Aviation & Space Flight)

Well, news today has noted that Australia is to spend about AU$2 billion looking for a heavy lifter.

See article:
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au.../0,5744,17571837%255E31477,00.html

Quoting The Australian:
The Government is considering buying or leasing long-term up to four US C-17s or eight smaller Airbus Military A400M propeller-driven aircraft

Quoting The Australian:
Defence sources say the C-17, which has been in service with the US Air Force since the early 1990s, is a proven aircraft, which would likely be ready for delivery earlier than the Airbus.

The C-17A would suit the RAAF very well. The RAF likes the 4 they have. The RAAF can start getting delivery about 18 months after they order them. Or they could wait until about 2013-2014 to begin deliveries of the A-400Ms.

Sounds like a good plan, the ADF has been short of heavy lift for a long time(well forever really) and something that could provide troop and equipment lift for overseas deployments without relying on allies or commercial charters such as AN-124 and IL-76s would be a good thing.
Having said that $2b for 4 airframes is putting a lot of the ADF's limited eggs in one basket!

Regards

Every user of the C-17 has fallen in love with the airframe. In fact the RAF is going to end up with 5 rather than the 4 they currently operate. Does anyboyd know how many hours those RAF examples have on them by now? It seems that they are rarely on the ground.

The RAF wants to terminate the lease and buy them outright.

Since the RAAF went for the KC330, I do not see as much of a need for eight A400s compared to only 4 C-17s. The range, versatility and shear space of the C-17 would be great.

2 Billion seems like a lot for only 4 though, I take it this includes the maintenance for the next 30 years or so as has been the case with recent contracts.
