Iraqi AF Hulks Anyone Seen Any Hawker Hunters?

Mon Dec 19, 2005 7:46 pm

Anyone seen any old Iraqi Hawker Hunters, used as decoys during the past two or several conflicts there?

I'd guess they would all have been turned to rubble during the Iran-Iraq war or at the latest Dessert Storm  Wink

Some of them ended up in Lebanon as the country had some ambitions to revive a Hunter squadron (due to easy maintenance and low budget). Don't know what came of that.
Others went to Jordan (donated) and some other arab countries (If I'm correct also Oman)
Hope it helps
who decided that a Horizon should be HORIZONtal???

Thanks FVTu134, I know that Oman did not get any Iraqi Hunters directly. I was in Oman with the Hunters from 1979 to 1999. The only Hunters received were from Jordan, and I have many of the serials and histories (just a few are missing) and two ex-Kuwait T.67's. Then indirectly through Jordan, there was at least one ex-Saudi Hunter. It is also possible that there was one ex-Abu Dhabi T.66, again through Jordan too.

The Hulks were around in Iraq at least until 1991 perhaps later than that given Iraqs idea to bury a lot of their airframes. I have a copy of a US DoD targeting photo showing the outline of a Hunter used as a decoy in Iraq.

Given their previous use, there could have been Hunters at Mosul, H2, Basra (although, as Basra was liberated by UK forces, something would have appeared in UK aviation sites) and Habbinaya (Saddam Hussein did not trust his Air Force and this base was pretty much derelict during the 1991 and 2003 wars)

I will keep looking.

My guess is, if there were any surviving Hunters, they were buried with the rest of the Iraqi Air Force.

During the 2003 invasion, I saw footage (on CNN) of US air force plane's infra red targeting H-3 airbase which clearly showed a silhouette of a Hawker Hunter on the ground which was subsequently destroyed by cluster bombs. I'm pretty sure they were used as decoys as it was parked next to a Mig-17.

Quoting RAFOHunter (Reply 3):

Nope none in Mosul.
