When the Wildcat was used by the British, was the aircraft in combat against the ME 109?

Most probably yes. Quote: Thirty British F4F-3As 'were despatched to Greece in March 1941, but taken over by the Fleet Air Arm after the defeat of Greece and used as Martlet IIIs in North Africa.'

It was used to replace the Fairey Fulmar, and added to the Sea Hurricane on British aircraft carriers. It had a reported 19:1 kill ratio, but it mostly faced bombers and lesser capable aircraft. Pilots were well aware that if the Martlet faced the FW190 it would be at a disadvantage in most aspects.

The Martlet also did rather well against submarines, with it's 6 .50 cals.
