How Does The F-15K Stack Up?

Sun Dec 25, 2005 4:14 am

Sorry if this topic has come up before; I'm still new with this site.

I have a question about the new F-15K, which, as I recall, its manufacturer claimed was the best "operational" fighter in the world. (This was shortly before the F-22 achieved that status.)

Is the F-15K really all that it's advertised to be?

It has advanced avionics and various other upgrades, and I don't doubt that it's better than the F-15C/D or even the F-15E, but how does it stack up to fighters like the Su-27 or MiG-29?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

It sounds different than every other F-15 I've ever heard, I don't know if the engines are more powerful but they aren't the same as what's used on other versions of the Eagle.

I think it would be great to build say 100 F-22's (60 @ Langley, 40 @ Elmendorf) and fill the rest of the F-22 spots with new F-15's with upgraded technology. Its still a very capable fighter.

The F-15K is one of the most advanced Eagles ever to be built. Along with the Singaporean bird it'll be tough to beat for pretty much anything out there.

Except for the F-22 and Typhoon, and perhaps the SU-30 series with the latest avionics which appear to be equal, there's nothing out there that'll touch 'em.

^^Interesting answers!

I, for one, would like to see a computer simulation of a "fly-off" or dogfight between an F-15K and one of the latest Sukhois, MiG's, or similar aircraft. (How long will it before software developers pick up on this idea?  Wink )

Or a friendly but all-out combat exercise between an actual F-15K and any such model.

The results would be telling, I think.

I really agree with that also. The F-15 is still an incredibly capable aircraft. I say, build 2-250 F-22s, and base them at Langley, Elmendorf, Tyndall, the big air superiority bases, and then begin replacing earlier models, with new build F-15s, make them all multi-role ala F-15E, but incorporate new avionics and new engines, and thrust vectoring...the training would be very minor as well as the cost reductions and the usefulness over the A-D models. Also incorporate a new generation of ATA weapons, as well as the new ATG weapons.

The F-15 is classified as a Mach 2.5-class aircraft, too, while the F-22 is classified as having a top speed of Mach 1.8. (I do know that the F-22 can sustain supersonic flight using supercruise (i.e., without having to use fuel-guzzling afterburners), which is a lot different from what the F-15 or other aircraft can do; the F-15 relies on afterburners for high-speed flight.)

I wonder what the REAL top speed of the F-22 is, though, because somehow I think it's classified.

One thing about the F-15E that has always struck me is that the aircraft simply LOOKS "macho", with all its fuel tanks and/or weapons on its hardpoints. It looks bulky, in the same way that a professional wrestler does. The F-22 is sleeker, but it doesn't have the "I've got tons of ammo" look that the F-15E seems to have. The F-15K probably has the same kind of capability, at least, as the F-15E.

Also, the MTOW of the F-15E is greater than that of the F-22, which means that the MTOW of the F-15K is probably higher than the F-22's as well.

Excellent point Aerospace fan.
The F-15 does have "GUNS" , not joking, it is definately a lot more intimidating aircraft to look at, and...it literally has all that ammo, and we have so much experience with it, why ditch it now, its so cheap comparably, and i just don't see the problem incorporating the F-22 engines, and systems to the F-15 and having a "differences" training program like commercial airlines

Thanks!

I think that the F-22 has a gun, too. But, still, it's definitely not as "macho" looking as the F-15E or F-15K, at least to me.  Smile
