Any number of middle eastern nations... the change happened in the 50's and 60's albeit. Then again, it would describe most users of Soviet/Eastern equipment.  Silly

A more recent convertee that springs to mind is Iran (late 70's).

Mil helicopters have a large application in numerous areas. They are affordable, and quite proven. CIA is currently using Mi-17s in Iraq & Afghanistan. Some Canadian logging companies have acquired some examples for use in North America. The main reason why former communist nations are discarding their old equipment is age and cost of maintenance. The MTB for the engine overhaul on an RD-33 is 500 hours! There are two of these items in a Mig-29/33! The GE-PW-110 can go 1000-1500 hours.
India went for the Su-30 for two main reasons. One, it rocks! Two, The US would not provide India with the technology transfer required to license build the aircraft.
Malaysia's woes with their F/A-18Ds probably prompted them to go for the Mig-29 out spite! That choice does reflect sound financial judgement in my opinion. Great as it is, the Mig-29 is a costly aircraft to operate.
UH-60's suck!!!
