Where Is The Closest B-1b Base To Norfork VA

Mon Feb 20, 2006 10:17 am

I mis out on a lot of great airplane that was around during my life time the SR-71, F-14 and the Concorde. It bothers me to this day that I did not realy see these jets in action, well ok I did see two F-14 from a distance fly by NAS Norfolk but, like I said it was at a distance and they was not on afterburners. I want see a B-1b in action before they retire them. I do not want the B-1b to be another jet on my list that mis out on. In fact seeing one in action would help me get over mising out on the three jet I listed because it got design similarity to them. So I just wanted to know how close is the nearest B-1b base to NS Norfolk so I could see them still in action.

Ellsworth AFB - Rapid City South Dakota, or Dyess AFB - Abilene Texas. Both are 1/2 a continent away from Norfolk VA. They often have the B-1B at the Dayton Int'l Airshow in July or August. I know its not exactly close to Norfolk, but beats South Dakota or Texas.

Dyess AFB in Abilene, Texas, and Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City, South Dakota, are the only bases I can think of. They used to be fairly close to you when the Georgia ANG flew them out of Warner Robins AFB. Your best opportunity may be to see one at the Andrews AFB Open House. I am not sure when it is but it usually attracts a good variety of the current inventory.

A few years ago there was one on display at the air show at NAS Oceana. It did not fly during the show, it was just a static display...but it had to get there and get out of there at some point during the week. So unless you feel like traveling, you may want to check the local airshows. Langley AFB, NAS Norfolk and NAS Oceana.

If you keep a "life list" of military aircraft, I can't think of a better place to experience a bunch at the same time than Red Flag exercises out of Nellis AFB. I fully plan to do this at least once in my lifetime. Not only would you have a good chance of seeing a B-1, but aircraft from various militaries around the world. You could probably get a cheap flight to Las Vegas, and head north and watch the action. I hear it is pretty incredible. This website has a good section on Red Flag (click on the button on the left side) with schedules and directions to the best viewing spots.

It sounds like you would have to travel anyway to see them and IMO it would be more exciting than going to Texas or South Dakota and just seeing them take off and land. Has anyone here gone up there and watched the action?

As noted above, Ellsworth and Dyess are the only two active B-1B bases. Tinker in OKC, is home to the Depot so you see them at least weekly there as well.

Or you can go to Guam, Diego Garcia etc....  Wink

I would say the open house at Andrews AFB every May during Armed Forces Weekend is your best bet, I have always seen a B-1B there the few times I've been up there.
