Acoustic Missiles?

Fri Mar 03, 2006 2:14 pm

This may be a bit of a silly question because I really know very little about missile homing systems. Anyway, I know that we have radar and infared guided missiles, and aircraft have countermeasures to deal with these threats (flares, chaff, stealth, whatever), but has anyone ever tried a missile that seeks out loud sources of noise? Even if planes like the F22 and F117 are very hard to detect on radar, they are still very loud... anyway, let the people who know alot more about these things take it away!

I'm sure the sound the wind at mach 2-3 would play hell with that sensor, not really so with the rocket motor as they mostly burn out quickly. Possibly might be a good secondary sensor for a short range missile.

Acoustic Sensors are used with the US ARMYs B.A.T.
The dual mode (acoustic/IR) seeker and gliding capability accommodate large target location uncertainties due to such efforts as target motion, configuration or orientation; winds, delivery vehicle accuracy or delivery patterns.
