What Do You Like About The F/A-18-E/F Super Hornet

Tue Mar 28, 2006 7:12 am

Hello Everybody

There been a lot of hateful things said about the Super Hornet, I should know I wrote alot of them. But I wanted to have a post talking about the positive thing about the Super Hornet. For me I like the fact that it could do a vertical hove like move across a airfield. So what are some thing so like about it.

PS: If I can say something good about the F/A-18 E/F super Hornet anybody could!

This post just illustrates the point that everyone has an opinion. It's surprising you have bad things to say about the Rhino being that you're an E3 in the Navy..Well, maybe not.

Anyway.. The Rhino can get in tight and slow with a Falcon and outturn it. The Rhino has a superior radar system than the Eagle. It requires less work and maintenence than both the Hornet (no small feat), and the Tomcat (ANYTHING requires less work than the Tomcat..  Smile, the aircraft it replaced) It brings some many different facets to the fight that other aircraft simply can't match. Lastly, I like it because I know that if I've got one circling over my dome, and I call it in, the bad guy dies. If he's not immediately circling over my dome, and I need help, he CAN get there immediately. I like that. It's a big warm-fuzzy factor.

As a Navy E-3 with at least 4 years left in the Navy, you might want to grow to like them. You'll see a whole lot of them.  Wink

11 hardpoints, 10 AAM's, AESA, and AIM-9X/JHMCS are enough to get anyones attention - Rafale, Euro, Sukhoi, or even the F22.

As a lifelong Tomcat advocate I must confess that I have actually come to really like the F/A-18F for USN use. (To me the single seat F/A-18E should be in the Air Force replacing F-15A/C's!) I really like the lines of the tandem pit for the Fox Hornet, retaining the tandem crew philosophy inspired by the fabled F-4 and carried over so well with the F-14.

Also, as a private pilot and former Marine avionics tech, I think the Block II F/A-18F Super Hornets with the Aft Missioned pits may be the best cockpits of any fighter jet ever made! I don't like the future pits that I see with the F22 and JSF - it makes it look like the pilot has little input and it's as if it's all done through Star Trek like telepathy.

Excellent SuperBug powerpoint presentation here...

First off, I need to bow and take a knee. I am a life-long F-14 Tomcat fan and am currently in morning over the loss of such a great airframe.

The Super Hornet is capable of many different missions and does most of them well. It is technologically advanced and brings the Navy well into the 21st century. It has proven itself in combat and has had few if any teething problems. It fills the needs it was designed to fill.

Disclaimer: While it does many things well, it is not a master of any trade. I personally believe ANOTHER aircraft could do the same missions better etc. Alas, that is not the case and one should not change horses mid race.
