Air Tanker RFI Due This Week

Tue Apr 25, 2006 12:18 am

Interesting article from Aviation Week on pending air tanker RFI. The USAF is looking for input from not just Boeing and Airbus but others such as "service providers". It will be an interesting process to watch. The link is below.

Hmmmm, make the choice in the summer of 2007, and fund the first 3 new tankers in FY-08? That is only 3 months apart.

Something just doesn't look right.

Seems like the USAF is asking for every possible option;

New build medimum size tankers (KC-767?, KC-30?, B-787-800/-900?)

New build large size tankers (B-747-400ERF/-800F?, B-777-200LRF?, A-340-500/-600?)

All new builds will work up to producing 15 aircraft per year.

Use commerical aircraft converted to tankers (B-747-400?, MD-11F?, A-330-200/-300? B-767-200ER/-300ER? A-340-300?)

Rebuild existing KC-135Es through modification or upgrade to KC-135Rs.

Commerical venture to take on some USAF Air Refueling tasks (training, etc.)

This leaves me thinking they have no idea how much money they will get from Congress.
