Navy C-40 With Winglets

Sat May 06, 2006 3:06 am

While driving home from work today I saw a C-40 with winglets getting ready to depart Oceana. I was under the impression the Navy C-40's were not going to get winglets, however one obvously did. Anyone have more information???

Probably that's the one which became the basis for the BBJ C.

This was not the aircraft I saw today. It was painted white with minimal markings like this one...

Yes that's it. Sorry, I must have mistyped something.

I was thinking that perhaps the Navy or Air Force had taken delivery of a new order - there may not be one in actual service yet. I only included the link to establish the relationship between what you've seen and the wingletted BBJ C which was mentioned in the last sentence of the fourth paragraph.

The USN is considering installing blended winglets on the C-40As, much like the USAF C-40B/Cs. The range extension clearly justifies the cost.

I had heard they were considering it, but I didn't know they'd already done it.

The timeframe of installing them is when the BuNo165829(one of VR-58's birds) and 830(VR-59) goes into SDLM in the spring and summer of next year. It hasn't been signed off on yet. It's all subject to funding, and whether the the Fleet Logistics Support Wing in Ft Worth, will allocate funding. Aircraft BuNo 165837 comes off the line late next year, and will go VR-57 in Coronado, CA would be the first with the blended winglets if the programme gets the go-ahead.

Jetjack74,

Will Willow Grove's (soon to be McGuire AFB's) VR C-9 Squadron be getting C-40s?

This is the latest order.
VR-57 will get their last aircraft maybe this year, possibly next year. VR-56 in Norfolk is the next after that. VR-61(my squadron) will follow in 2009(current projection), and VR-52 at Willow Grove/McGuire will be the last. VR-46 will either decom or transfer to Ft Worth and transition to C-130 or C-20(Gulfstream4). 46 is probably the only C-9 unit that won't transition over to the C-40.

The June 2006 issue of Air Forces Monthly has a comprehensive article on USAF and USN VIP tansports.

Yes, the aircraft will be modified as they go through SDLM(see below)

On June 5th, the most recent Navy C-40 was delivered. Aircraft BuNo 165837 was delivered at BFI with the Aviation Partners winglets on it

I thought the first 2 C-40As did not have the additional outer wing parts for winglets, so those 2 won't get them, but all other USN C-40s, from ship #3 on will get them eventually.
