Seoul Is Given Boeing Ultimatum

Tue May 16, 2006 8:11 am

Boeing and the US government are urging South Korea to select a 737-based airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system during a key acquisition meeting this week

Proposals from Boeing, offering the 737 with Northrop Grumman’s Mesa radar, and Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), offering the Gulfstream G550 with Elta’s Phalcon radar integrated by US-based DRS Technologies, are being evaluated.

Sources say if the DAPA selects both teams for contract negotiations, IAI will almost certainly win because its business jet-based offer is less expensive.

But the US government is urging the administration to eliminate IAI, saying its team has not provided sufficient technical information and does not fully meet the requirement.

It looks like the US government is pressing the Korea to buy expensive Boeings AEWs.

They do have a point. The Wedgetail is flying, and meeting the RAAF requirements. It would be a great asset for the ROKAF.

Well at least they're not filling a lawsuit like Dassault did when they lost the South Korean fighter competition to Boeing.

When you deploy about 40,000 tropps for 50 years for a countries protection at thier request, you expect a little bone every now and then.

Flight Global reports that IAI is expected to receive a mid-June deadline to secure clearance for the U.S. content of its proposal. It is viewed that IAI would be hard-pressed to meet the deadline thus the possibility for a sole-source procurement.

Off-topic, in the same news item, the ROK MoD had decided on a further 20 F-15K that could keep the program open until 2011.

That is good news for Boeing and the F-15 program.
