12 To 18 Rafales For Morocco

Wed Jun 07, 2006 6:23 am

Dassault pourrait vendre 12 avions Rafale au Maroc (presse)

PARIS, 6 juin 2006 (AFP) -
Le Maroc pourrait être le premier client à l'export de Dassault Aviation pour son avion de combat Rafale, grâce à un financement de l'Arabie saoudite pour 12 à 18 appareils, révèle la Tribune dans son édition à paraître mercredi.

DASSAULT AVIATION

According French AFP, Morocco could be the first export customer of Dassault Aviation Rafale Fighters. Finance by Saudi Arabia.

Haven't seen any English press reports yet. Interesting point on the finance if this turns out the be the case. Could be Saudi Arabia's way of easing the sting of the Typhoon purchase.

Why would SA finance Morroco's military purchases?

Given the Saudi's general dissatisfication of the Tornado ADV, I'm surprised Saudi Arabia went all out with the Typhoon - a 50/50 mix of Rafale and Typhoon would have been an interesting venture and hey, they can afford to offset the risk!

Nonetheless, good to go Morocco!

The Saudis brought Tornado ADV (only 24, compared to 96 IDS), since at the time, the US were less than keen to sell more F-15's over and above the original late 1970's deal.
ADV, being specific for the long endurance, bomber swatting, heavy ECM enviroment, all weather defence of the UK, was far from ideal for the Saudis, absorbing yet another type into an AF that at the time at least, was barely able to operathe inventory they already had, (even with extensive support from suppliers with an army of expats), could not have been easy.

I read here (dutch only) that Morroco is buying 24 F-16's for 233M$.

That is an extreme low amount of money, so unless these arent' completely battered down frames without any spare's, training etc. this is very peculiar

Are these Rafales in addition to the 24 F-16's that Lockheed just got a $233.6M contract for?

Previously published report quoted the figure at $2.6B for 24 Block 50/52 F-16s plus 24 Hawker Beechcraft T-6B trainers.....

"US Congress has been notified of the possible sale of 24 Lockheed Martin F-16C/D fighters and 24 Hawker Beechcraft T-6B trainers to Morocco, together valued at up to $2.6 billion.

[.....]

The DSCA says Morocco has requested the possible purchase of 24 F-16C/D Block 50/52 aircraft with Northrop Grumman APG-68(V)9 radars and either General Electric F110-129 or Pratt & Whitney F100-229 improved-performance engines.

The $2.4 billion sale would include conformal fuel tanks, either Lockheed AAQ-33 Sniper or Northrop AAQ-28 Litening targeting pods, BAE Systems or Goodrich reconnaissance pods and a choice of self-protection electronic warfare suites. Helmet-mounted cueing systems, Link 16 datalinks and Have Quick secure radios are also included."

The above report also mentioned that the French had already acknowledged Morocco's rejection of their Rafale offer.....

"French officials announced in October that Morocco had rejected its offer of Dassault Rafale fighters and selected the F-16,"

The latest info described the deal as "pending".....

"The F-16 (built in several European nations, and still in service with nine NATO air forces) remains an active programme. 4,398 aircraft gave been delivered to 25 nations, and there is a backlog of 98 more, which will keep the line busy until 2012. Proposals have been made to India and Romania, and an order from Morocco is described as ‘pending’."

2.6B$ vs 233M$ , either the Morrocons are the best negotiators in the galaxy, or luchtvaartnieuws.nl doesn't have their $hit together

The $233.6M is for the initial award to begin production. Here's LockMart's "fresh" press release.....

http://www.lockheedmartin.com/news/p...ases/2008/060608ae_f16morocco.html

Quote:
"Lockheed Martin is being awarded a contract totaling $233.6 million to begin production of 24 aircraft, along with associated support equipment, alternate mission equipment and other support elements for Morocco. This effort will support the Foreign Military Sales program for Morocco."

This was discussed here.....

http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/military/read.main/78460/

Morocco needs those Block 50/52s now that Algeria is substituting Su-30MKAs for the rejected MiG-29s.....

Understood. The quote about the "pending" F-16 deal was to emphasize that there was no "Rafale deal".  Smile I was supporting your answer to 474218 but didn't do a very good job of it.
