Area 51 Janet Image Question

Sun Jun 11, 2006 1:59 pm

Please do not violate OPSEC.

If you go to google.com click on maps, and the search area 51, you get a nice image of Groom Lake. Just NW of the 12/30 runway is a Janet 737, but it looks like it has something coming off the port wing at a funny angle. Any Ideas?

Interesting. It's definitely some sort of equipment. Or more accurately - it looks like TWO pieces of equipment. However, it looks like it might be ramping off from the top of the wing. But then again... it also looks like it might be under the wing. You know... it almost looks like the baggage conveyor belt carts for removing luggage from the cargo hold.

*On a sidenote: I never knew Google's satellite imagery was so damn detailed for "sensitive" locations!!! I just looked up Camp Anaconda - and holy sh*t - the entire flight line, with H-60s and CH-47s, are all lined up just as they are at this very moment!! I can see the guard towers, the perimeter wall, the USAF complex, etc...

Very disturbing.

Yeah, actually I was a bit surprised too. I have NEER seen imagry of A51 that you could distinguish ANY A/C let alone the Janet's the UH-1's and more amazingly to me, the F-16's. The details of the surrounding area are actually more interesting to me, but I'll leave it at that.

You should also check out Bellevue, NE.

Yeah... I've found some "interesting" stuff on Google Earth. There's web forums out there that are chock-full of amateur photo intel "analysts" with WAAAAY too much time on their hands, finding all sorts of crazy s**t out there. Images that, upon reflection, should probably have been degraded a bit.

Reflections from the sun, nothing more...

And I am serious about this too. Go find a parking lot anywhere in Google Map and you'll see similar effects.

It's what's inside those hangars that is so sensitive, not the ramp and buildings.

UH-1..?? I saw a few -60's... didn't see any UH-1's... Geez.. you forgot the King Air and 2 BE-1900's...The place is no secret and neither is the commercial traffic in and out. Just go to Flightcomm and you can see all the 'Janet' flights listed.

What are the two curved lines in the lake bed going directly into each of the runways. They look like approach references on the ground. Is that what they are?

Most definitely light being reflected, I see it a lot on GE.

You mean the nuclear test range?

That and some other interesting buildings/road formations. In all likely hood they are nothing; but I like to keep my tin foil hat/B744F moments to myself.

Haha, the detailed Groom Lake images almost makes you think the REAL interesting work is being done somewhere else...  scratchchin

This is not some live webcam stuck in the sky, in fact the imagery is at least 3 years old (some of the buildings at my college don't show up). The other website, globexplorer.com, had imagery from 1992.

Having said that, if the rumors are true about Area 51, then that place has not been in "full active" use for a long time. As someone mentioned, the sensitive crap is not left outside anymore. But then the imagery looks like it was in the early afternoon. Weren't all F-117 test flights done at night?  Wink
