Next AFB To Get C-17s?

Wed Jun 14, 2006 11:23 am

Now that we are down to the last couple C-17s for Hickam AFB, who is the next one to get them?

uh....no. That isn't even an AMC base.

Travis AFB is getting the next 13 C-17s, first tail number being 06-6154. It is scheduled for delivery around August 1st.

The Royal Austrailian AF may take a couple of Travis' jets, and push back some of the USAFs delivery dates. However, Travis will still get thier first jet on time. Dover, the last US AFB to get them, may be pushing its first delivery back from June to August due to this.

Elmendorf and Travis I believe will round out the current round of C-17 bases, hopefully Congress will fund the additional 42 airframes.

Elmendorf is not getting new C-17s. They are getting 8 C-17s from Charleston and McChord AFBs.

Dover and Travis are the last two bases to get new ones. McChord will get one C-17 between the Travis and Dover deliveries.

Currently, 54. McChord has 50. Altus has 13. Jackson has 8, McGuire has 13, March has 8, Hickam has 7 of 8, Travis will have 13, and Dover will have 13. McChord is to gain one plane and lose 4, and Charleston is to lose 5, making it 47 each. 2 of the 10 are going to Altus. The other 8 are going to Elmendorf.

In the end...
Altus 15
Charleston 47
McChord 47
Jackson 8
McGuire 13
March 8
Hickam 8
Travis 13
Dover 13
Elmendorf 8

I just got back from flying today at LGB and there was a Travis C-17 sitting outside the Boeing Hangar. It has a black and white stripe on the tail (in the front where the arrow things are I mean) and the back half of the stripe is all white with the California Bear in the middle of it. I wasn't able to get a photo of the tail number. There was also a C-17 for Hickam doing runups or something when I took off but then was parked back over next to the Travis one once I returned an hour and a half later. There is also a C-17 from Charleston over next to the tower that apparently belly landed in Iraq (could have been Afghanistan, but somewhere over there) and they have it up on jacks and are replacing the entire underside. I got some cool pics so I'll try and upload when i figure out how to do it. I also got some relative close-up's of the 2 test bed C-17's and the prototype 717 which are now parked next to each other on the north side of the airport.

I want to fly the C-17 (if I get in the AF, and if I get the C-17), so what base is the best? I am leaning towards CHS because that is where my father flew the C-141 out of. (and where I was born at)

get used to the pharse "needs of the service". Your base location depends on where you graduate in your class, usually first gets their choice of assigment and so on down the line. and then of course it comes down what is available and where you are needed. But good luck to you
