Current Status Of YAL-1

Mon Jun 26, 2006 7:37 am

With all the hullabaloo going on in DPRK right now with the possible missle and whatnot, where is the YAL-1 now, and how advanced is the program? Enough to take a pot-shot in the boost phase yet?

No, the tracking and pointing system is still being installed at Wichita. The laser itself won't be installed (at Edwards) until 2007.

As THorny noted it is in Wichita at the moment. The offices at Edwards, Seattle and New Mexico are also working hard on the project.

Last I heard the program took a really big budget hit and was almost being put on the back burner.

I suspect the current events in North Korea will go a long way toward pushing the ABL back to the funding front-burner...

Dunno, it was fairly recent that this happened, well into the N Korea threat. I will have to go digging for where I read this.

No, YAL-1 fell on funding hard times when the Air Force budget started getting pinched excessively a couple of years ago because of the war in Iraq.
