Canada CH-149 Cormorant Ditches In Ocean

Thu Jul 13, 2006 8:28 pm

Well, it looks like Canada now only has 14 Cormorants left in the fleet which is such a sad thing for such a magnificent helicopter:

Fair Use:
The air force said the CH-149 Cormorant helicopter from 413 Transport and Rescue Squadron ditched in the water around 12:30 a.m.

He added that while weather conditions were not good in the area at the time of the crash, he did not know if severe weather may have played a part in the tragic mishap.

“As far as we understand, it (the crash) just came out of the blue — a sudden call by a coast guard vessel, in fact, that the helicopter had ditched,” said Pulchny.

That sucks!

Tragic to lose good people while doing their jobs. Airframes can be replaced, it is not so easy to replace the personnel who operate the aircraft.

The men and women who man the rescue helicopters and vessels of the world's coast guard/armed forces/etc are heroes every day.

This loss is so much more than a replaceable helicopter.

My prayers to the families and loved ones of the crew.

Wow, I hope that wasn't due to the problems that they were having with the tailboom or whatever that was; hate to see the US President have bought a faulty platform!

After the loss of Labrador 305, one of the reccomendations was to install Flight Data Recorders & Cockpit Voice Recorders on all future Canadian military aircraft. Is the Cormorant equipped with these?

The tail rotor half-hub is what you're thinking of. It could've caused the crash, but it's not very likely. The inspection interval is pretty short now & the technicians know what to look for. IIRC, it was Canadian maintenance people that identified the problem in the first place.
Seven on board- what's a normal CH-149 SAR crew, five?
