B1 Lifted Off Runway At Diego Garcia (Pics)

Thu Jul 13, 2006 10:47 pm

Appologies of this has been posted before. I searched but didn't find anything!

In early May flightglobal.com reported on the US Air Force Rockwell B-1B strategic bomber that closed the runway of an Indian Ocean US military base for three days after a wheels-up landing.

That bird is actually one from my friend's squadron. He said that the damage actually isn't as bad at they first thought and that the bird should be salvegable.

A posting in the original incident topic states there are some in storage!

B-1B Makes Wheels Up Landing

I didn't think all the debris falling from the forward gear doors boded well for this airframe!

I didn't see any skin panel buckling or anything to indicate the airframe was damaged. Looks like she was put down gently as possible and got some paint scraped off.

Salvageable yes, but I still wonder if it wouldn't be easier to trade that airframe out with one that is schedualed to go to the desert.

I was surprised to see that dust cloud to....must have picked up concrete dust during the slide.

Even though this damage is easily repairable, it may be a lot cheaper to scrap her and re constitute one of the desert storage Bones.

That is not a good sign for an airplane that is thought not to have a lot of damage. Those chuncks of concrete, and concrete dust would have gone through bulkheads, and strong structures. Concrete dust is highly corrosive, esspecially to engines, and all four inlets must be full of this stuff. Does anyone know if the engines were shut down on landing, in an attempt to reduce damage to them?

My guess is it won't take long to decide to scrap her in place, and salvage all useable parts.

They might not do that either.

They may just put it together enough for a ferry flight and then fly her to DM.
