Fighter Pilots With Correctable Vision Defects?

Fri Jul 14, 2006 12:01 pm

Is there a country where people with minor and correctible vision defects - such as myopia - can be accepted as fighter pilots?

I can't imagine that's possible via the "official" way. But I guess there are enough corrupt countries where a little money from daddy can pay the bill ...

In "normal" countries there should be enough applicants for fighter pilot training, so that authorities don't need to fall back on half-blinded people like me (-6.0 on both eyes) ...  hypnotized

The USN now allows corrective surgery even for aviation candidates. USNA middies get it done every week at Bethesda, and it's paid for by the U.S. Government.

I believe all U.S. services now accept corrected vision for aviators.

Interestingly enough, NASA still doesn't allow any sort of corrective procedure for spaceflight. I wonder if that will change in time?

I know the feeling. I had to go SWO (no NFO for me thank you very much).
Radial Keratotomy was not accepted back then.

Check out this USNA site. Article #1, from the NY Times (6/20/2006) talks about the procedure, and the change in USN policy towards LASIK and aviation status.
