St Johns is a good stopping point for C-130s transiting the Atlantic. It has good service from the FBO and comfortable accomodations for crew rest. It lies closer to the great circle routing than Lajes to the south and Keflavik to the north. It also has other options for alternates, ie. Stephensville, Goose, Gander, Halifax; than Iceland or the Azores.

I have personally seen CF-188s in Stephenville and Gander several times.

Permanent based CF Air force units are
103 Search and Rescue Squadron (CH149 Cormorant) at 9 Wing Gander, Newfoundland. and
444 Combat Support Squadron (CH146 Griffon) at 5 Wing Goose Bay, Labrador.
Several reserve Army, Navy and Air Force units across the Rock, No US military left since Argentia closed in 1994.
