Where Are Most E-6B Mercury Based?

Mon Jul 17, 2006 9:57 am

I know I am in the Navy, but I do not know were I can see a lot of E-6B Mercury's. I saw one at NAS North Inland for a visit, but I just want to know where most of them are base at.

I believe that are all at least home based out of Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City but obviously they will spend the night at all sorts of various places around the world as the mission dictates.

VQ-3, VQ-4 are based at Tinker AFB, but are often forward deployed to:
Offutt AFB, Nebraska
NS Rota, Spain
Travis AFB, California
Hickam AFB, Hawaii.
Made from jets!

Patrick AFB in Cocoa Beach is one place where an amazing assortment of aircraft can be seen including the E-6 when it transits from the south. They also have an incredible mix of C-130 special birds. Antennas hanging off of every surface, almost a flying porcupine sometimes...Just sit in the lineup at 2nd Light and you can see everything come right in over your head at 50 feet...tasty waves, tasty aircraft, a combo that is hard to beat IMO

VQ-7 has the 737-200 trainer on the E-3 side of the ramp at Tinker while the E-6s are over on the Romeo ramp.

Yep. Pax is east coast and Travis is west. Offutt is for the STRATCOM forward deployment.

Its a 737-600 ex Lauda Air. I'll be in the right seat of it in a few months...

My bad on the dash, Copy -600 not a 200. It does still have the lauda-esq stripes on it so that makes sense. I've never been in it but I hear it is nice.

The E-3 wing got ride of the TC-18 trainer birds in favour of sims....bad decision.

Good luck with the jet!!!!!!

Sorry! It's that as a former SWO type I still like to make fun of "brown shoe pukes".

I'm coming from a different platform so I didn't want to be gaudy and say something I haven't earned yet (i.e. the left seat).

I wouldn't expect anything less from a "shoe."

It's ok, don't feel to bad, it's an honest living. Just like civies need garbage men, the Fleet needs someone to do the dirty, non-intelectual jobs, like.....hauling cargo, flying an E-2, or scouting ahead for the Fleets strike force (DDG's, CG's, SSN's).

I'm sure that even in their dissapointment, your folks still love you!  smirk
