CNN V-22 At Farnborough Video...

Wed Jul 19, 2006 3:25 am

Hopefully this link will work for everyone, it's from CNN so in case it doesn't look around for it on their site; entitled: "The Osprey finally soars"

http://www.yahoo.com/s/349352

I think it is great that it finally works, but I still think the Marines are going to need a traditional, modern rotary winged platform (US-101) to be able to replace all the medium lift CH-46E's that they want/have to.

And what is with the dark gray paint, it looks like Air Force paint?!

VMM-263 from MCAS New River will be self-deploying to Iraq next year; I have a friend who will be attached to the unit to help the platform work out any bugs that they might encounter.

I noticed the caption for the video was "It's Boeing's latest machine". That's probably news for the folks over at Bell.

Well that and it's taken 20+ years for the V-22 to just get to this point - sort of ironic since Boeing loves to tout the "speed" of the V-22 as one of it's assets.

Considering that the aircraft is manufactured by the Bell-Boeing IDS team, the caption isn't actually wrong.

Watching the video one would get the impression that Boeing is the primary contractor. Bell is only mentioned once, and when it is it's not pointed out that they are the prime contractor.

So far the US Air Force and US Marine Corps.

I think this aircraft is something that the Army and Coast Guard could use, the Coast Guard could get to a rescue as quick as a fixed wing aircraft and then hover to make a rescue like a rotary aircraft.

The shiny dark gray paint is primarily for use on the USAF aircraft. However when they decide to change the delivery order of aircraft at the last minute in Bell's Amarillo final assembly facility, the Marines have decided to give the IR and RCS signature reducing paint a try.

Down side of this shiny paint is it gets very slippery when wet. Even when painted over walk way coatings.

Although it is not getting much press, the second BA609 civilian tiltrotor turned rotors for the first time this week in Italy (ship one is in Texas). Word is it should be at the Paris Air Show next year.

Have fun,

I think it's rotors and subsequent engine exhaust would be too impractical for a SAR role, and using the aft ramp for a hoist on SAR might not tend to be too popular, either.

I've read that the rotorwash strength makes that prohibitive, and that even the Sea Stallion had a tendency to push the rescuey underwater so that it was impractical in that role.
