Turkey Wants 30 F-16 Block 52 Plus

Wed Aug 02, 2006 2:02 am

"According to the defense news, and some Turkish papers this will be a bridging order until a decision is made at the end of the year between F-35 and Eurofighter." Also it is always neighborly to keep the same amount of F-16 orders with Greece.

I thought it was a done deal for the F-35, up to 100 of them. If not Turkey's fast erosion of EU aspirations will boost F-35s chances.

You know when your mom used to say: "If jimmy jumps from the bridge, are you going to jump too?"

Well, Gr & TK remind me of that all the time. Those two deserve each other!

IIRC Pakistan announced plans to buy a "few" awhile back. Now Turkey wants 30 more.

ANKARA, Aug 30 (Reuters) - NATO-member Turkey will purchase 30 F16 fighter jets as part of a plan to modernise its military, the chief of the air force said on Wednesday.

"We will purchase 30 F16s by 2011. We are still trying to find the funds but I don't think that will be a problem," Air Force chief General Faruk Comert told reporters during a Victory Day celebration, marking Turkey's war of independence.

Per Wikipedia, the size of their air force is huge...over 250 F-16s!

From Flightglobal, it is an option versus the $500M upgrade for 48 F-4Es.....

These 30 pieces will be the replacements of the training and duty losses the F16 squadrons. There are also pieces to replace the the F4E models which were bound to be modernised to F42 2020 Terminator but cancelled due to political reasons.

TAF thinks it would be cheaper to recieve second hand F16s instead of modernising the old F4s which are really very expensive.

There are inaccurete information on the Vikipedia about TAF.To my knowkedge the total F16 number is bigger than 300(360 if I am not mistaken) and TAF never had any A10s.(They had plans for it though but none ever entered service)

Yes. Flightglobal says the orders would keep the F-16 line open till 2010.

Jesucristo...not as many as the F-4, but pretty good, if you consider that the F-4 was replaced by multiple types.

I think they should wait for the F-35 instead of ordering further F-16s.

It's also highly unlikely that they order the EF, because their EU ambitions got more than one damper in recent times and given thier extremely self-conscious attitude on that, they will just say "Shove it!" ...
