EA-6B Prowler: Why So Loud?

Wed Aug 02, 2006 2:56 am

I hear many stories about how the Prowler is the loudest aircraft on a carrier deck on launch. This initially surprised me since it doesn't even use burners and its not substantilly larger than the other aircraft. Why is it so noisy, is it something in the type of engine or what?

Unless I am mistaken (and I frequently am) a big reason is the engine.

It appears to be a straight-pipe turbojet where most newer designs have a fan and bypass configuration.

Turbojets are almost categorically louder than even low-bypass fanjets. On many aircraft this is especially pronounced at and near idle power. The early DH or Hawker 125 was seemingly louder on taxi than it was on the takeoff roll.
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

It is because of it having turbojets instead of turbo fans.

Yes, there is nothing louder on the deck of a carrier, annoying though? Very debatable. To me, the louder the better, and when your teeth feel like they are about to rattle out of your head, thats a plus. Nothing can replace a flight deck experience. NOTHING.

Certainly is a curious nickname given its audibility!

I can definitely attest to the Prowler's volume, aside from Horizon's Dash 8's, they're the only aircraft flying around the Puget Sound area that I can identify by sound.
Picked a hell of a week to quit sniffing glue.
