South Korea Selects B737 AEW&C

Fri Aug 04, 2006 1:13 pm

South Korea has at last selected Boeing's 737 with Northrop Grumman's MESA radar for its long-running AEW&C contest. Boeing is said to be arranging the sole-source contract and had reassured Seoul immediately before its selection that problems which plagued the Australian Wedgetail procurement would not affect this acquisition.

Seems like Boeing is especially 'charmed' on the South Korean front, considering the additional 20 F-15K order.

Sounds good to me. I got two questions about the order:

  • How heavily moded are they?

  • Which version of the 737 are they basing it on?

I did some searching, and the Boeing site said that:

    Quoting The Boeing Website:
The 737 AEW&C is based on the Boeing Next Generation 737-700 featuring 21st century avionics, navigation equipment, and flight deck. It has an operational ceiling of 41,000 feet and a range in excess of 3,500 nautical miles. Because of its high technology, the aircraft requires minimal downtime for maintenance.

The site, but it is two years old. I wonder what has changed

  • What are the specs for this (ie, endurance, range (of both the radar and the aircraft)?

Quoting DEVILFISH (Thread starter):

I am sure Boeing would be even happier if Congress lifted their ban, but that is another whole tread, that has kinda already happened.

Edit for additions. Oops

I will put in what I know.

The major mods are the structural changes involved with mounting the radar on the roof and adding associated sensors around the aircraft. Quite a bit in the end I think.

The system is based on the 700 but it has the 800 wings and undercarriage to allow for the extra weight. It is essentially a BBJ modified!

I have not seen any real info on this and have a feeling it falls in the classified section but not 100% sure.

I am not sure the Koreans had much choice on the AWACS!

Hope they are not in frantic rush for them, the Australian ones have been delayed by approx 2 years.
But then I guess being a launch customer you do get all the bugs!!

Correct, it starts out in life as a BBJ1 airframe, or a C-40B airframe (without winglets), depending on how you look at it.

Nothing to do with charm, ths is the real world. Korea were ordered to order the Boeing aircraft.

Congratulations.

WOW! Let's try that on tiny, lightly defended Holland!!

BUY MY BIG MACS, YOU BASTARDS!!!  Silly

Seriously though, I wonder if Boeing may take the opportunity to make a nice offer to the RoKAF to exchange their old VIP B737-3Z8 (even though it probably has a low mileage) for some new BBJ's!

Talk about taking something out of context!!!!

They were not "ordered" to buy anything. Boeing told them no more delays, either buy them or dont. The Koreans have delayed this process so long Boeing is losing interest.

Reality could not be any different that what you are implying.

Considering that the first of the Australian order is just clearing out the bugs, and Turkey has also just selected it, chances are these three versions wouldn't be much different from each other, with maybe only token customization to address country specific requirements. And given that the order would be for a very small number of airframes, it's not likely that they would develop a heavily modified one. Also, I doubt they would make public the exact detailed specifications.

If you read the linked report, the penultimate paragraph says that Boeing had secured the required licenses and technical agreements "several months ago."

IAI with the G550 and the Elta Phalcon radar was the last competitor. I think SAAB with Ericsson Erieye also participated. There are not that many companies who are offering these systems.

I am speaking of F-22s. Devilfish. Does anyone know anything about the AEWAC's capablities, as in its enourance and radar range?

Looks like they may well have the order;

SEOUL (XFN-ASIA) - South Korea's defense ministry is expected today to name Boeing as winner of a 2.1 bln usd deal to provide four AWACS early warning aircraft, officials said.

'I hope that the final decision will be made today because we completed price negotiations with Boeing,' said Lee Kang-Gun, chief of standardization management at the Defense Acquisition Program Agency.

Thanks mate for the link. Although what I'm searching for now is the news regarding delays to Turkey's Peace Eagle AEW&C a/c.
