Hizbollah UAV Downed

Tue Aug 08, 2006 7:29 pm

A F16 downed a Hizbollah UAV over Israel, Hizbollah has twice sent UAVs over Israel. Anyone knows if IAF lost any UAVs over Lebanon?

They have lost a few over the years. But if you mean this conflict since July 12th, they have lost only 2 so far.
The one lost over the Barouk mountains was said to be due to a malfunction and was not shot down.

Thanks for the info, I think one was lost during Operation Grapes of Wrath
over Lebanon?
I think this is the first Hizbollah UAV lost over Israel, seem like it was shot down over the Mediterrean sea, 10 km off shore.

What kind of UAV do they use? Anything sophiticated? For what purpose do they use it?

It is thought that Hizbollah has gotten several UAVs from Iran, and Iranina AF crews are actually "flying" these UAVs. This one, is thought to have had a 90lb (41kg) warhead and heading for Tel Aviv.

A few weeks ago, another UAV scored a hit on an Isreali Navy FFG, damaging it, but did not sink it. IIRC, 4 Isreali Sailors were killed.

KC135, I thought it was later confirmed as a Silkworm missle not a drone that hit the ship?
BTW its back in service.

It wasn't a Silkworm. It was a Iranian C802, which is basically a chinese mixed copy of a French Exocet and a US Harpoon. Comparing it to a Silkworm is like comparing a stone-age made sling-shot with a sniper rifle.

It could have easily sunk the corvette, but apparantly it struck too high in helicopter deck or the warhead did not explode. The four casualties are really sad, but a 200 and something kilogramm warhead could cut a ship of that size in half and would cause much more casualties than four. The damage that could be seen on the outside of the ship was minor ...

Most people on the ship, aside the four who perished, had a really lucky day ...

This is the missile used from Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-802

Still we don't know the damage it caused to the corvette. I don't think any photos were released by the Israelis so far.

Pictures and video were shown. It had a small (maybe 50-75cm diameter) hole on the starboard side right above the waterline, with some burn marks around it. The hole was directly below the helicopter hangar, which explains why two of the four crew members killed were Israeli air force personnel. They were mechanics supporting chopper operations on the ship (Israel's 5 Dauphin helicopters are operated by the Air Force on behalf of the Navy).

I'm not sure of the details but it's been said that it was a complete fluke that the damage was not far more extensive. As we know, the second missile launched that night SUNK a freighter.
