Luftwaffe A310 At LAS?

Sat Aug 19, 2006 10:47 am

Was spotting at LAS today about 2:30 Pacific time. Heard a jumbled call for a heavy. Thats all I could get out of it. Out of nowhere comes a gray A310 with Luftwaffe on the side. Anyone have any idea what this plane is doing in Vegas? I have never seen it before.

probably in for the Red Flag at Nellis. I know it was a big one this time, a lot of allies where coming to Vegas and Im sure that the Luftwaffe will be one of them. Most likely supporting that.

Well the German Air Force has a couple of stations out here, as far as I know only in El Paso and around Phoenix though. But it could be in cooperation with the NATO, since the Luftwaffe has a couple of lazarete a/c (is that the right word?)

Cheers,

The Luftwaffe trains in Goodyear, AZ, and at Holloman in NM for their Tornados.

I used to see RAF TriStars at the charter terminal all the time. I asked around and was told mearly "Nellis". My question is, since the Lufwaffe and RAF are military why not land at Nellis?

Well. Every few weeks there is a KC-135 or two parked at the charter terminals. I have also seen a few C-160s from time to time. Last week there were 4 KC-135s parked there at once. The Red Flag idea makes a lot of sense. But I also wonder why they wouldn't just be parked out at Nellis.

Yes, it is all for Red Flag...In the past week at LAS, there has been Luftwaffe and French Air Force C-160's, many different C-130's, Saudia 777, Qatar A340 and other "stuff". This occurs several times per year and these visitors are not that unusual.

To answer your question, from what I have been told, Signature FS maintains the military fuel contracts for many of the military forces worldwide. This is the reason that you see many military transport aircraft at civilian airports when an air force base is very close by (i.e. LAS & Nellis). These a/c cannot fuel at the bases and many of these bases do not have the massive inground fuel available that the commercial airports have. Last week, KC-135's were in and out of LAS like WN flights (OK, a little exaggeration!), so it makes for some interesting spotting a few times per year especially when the beautiful VC-10's start arriving!

I would guess that during these flags that there just isnt enough room on the ramp for the larger craft like the tristars and A310s.

German Tornados train a lot in Goose Bay. I don't know where exactly they have their base, but as far as I know, Halifax is one of their main stations.

Flying 100feet above the ground with the afterburner on is something which isn't really popular in Germany with its 82 million inhabitants, so Canada is a good alternative for training.

It is a thing of the past ! Luftwaffe has recently left Goose Bay and don't use it anymore for regular training. This is because the importance of ultra-low level flight has decreased very much in the past decade.

The only reason why you might still see Luftwaffe aircraft there is to collect spares and equipment still left there.

Another possibility are NATO exercises.

Goose Bay has been closed since at least two years now. I think even more. Why? because:

A Luftwaffe A310 is a frequent visitor at Dulles, over by the Singature FS ramp.

Tornado training will also be stopped soon since the EUFI is taking over and Tornados will run out. So the Luftwaffe might stick to training in Laage then.

Not really. The Tornado will stay for at least another decade.
