RAF Nimrod At MSP!

Thu Sep 14, 2006 12:06 pm

Today, at around 4 o'clock, I saw a RAF Nimrod on approach for MSP. It was in that military light brown color, and had no visible registration. It was a Nimrod, though, because I saw the probe out of the tail, and the two pods forward of the wings. Boy was she loud!! Does anyone know why the British anti-sub/maritime reconnaissance aircraft was here in the "North Star State"??

Go Sioux!

Quoting JewPilot (Thread starter):

A pair of Russian Subs was spotted in lake superior, The US Navy called in the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Australian Navy, etc..... to help with the reconnaissance of the subs!!!

Of course I am just kidding, the RAF regularly sends C-130s, VC-10s and occasionally Nimrods to the US for training exercises, as well as vacation trips to Vegas (no joke). MSP is a good re-fueling point/customs place for them to land before they continue there trip onwards in the US. Hope this helps a bit!

If you see one again, look at either the fin or on the nose. The last 2/3 numbers of the reg are usually plastered there in larger figures than on the fuselage.

Having said that, they are probably so rare in MSP that'll be the first and last time you see one there!

I have seen Nimrods here in MSP before, get them once or twice a year. No real surprise. But great to see. Also have RAF C-17 all the time. I think they end up at Red Flag outside LAS, Twentynine Palms in California, or Yuma, AZ.

They come to MSP because they fly the great circle route to the UK. They get great in and out service by ASIG and Customs @ the HHH term.

I saw it rolling out on Rwy 12L from the terminal. The RAF visitors add a nice variety to the local traffic.
