What Is The Latest On Rutan's Space Ship 2?

Thu Sep 21, 2006 9:08 am

It has been over one year since Rutan and Branson announced their plan to build two Space Ship 2's, to carry paying space tourists. But Scaled Composites has no updates on their web site for a year and other than Branson hawking reservations, no updates of a technical nature seem forth coming.

Anyone hear what is happening in the Mojave desert? I know Rutans operation is similar to the Skunk Works, but this is supposed to be a commercial project.

"Eve" has been described as a 737 sized White Knight 2. I don't know if their hangar is big enough to hold such a beast. Also, Mr. Rutan is now building something on a little larger scale and complexity than cut foam fiberglass airplanes with no (or few) hydraulic systems. If it were me, I'd use a converted airliner with overpowered engines to take a payload (SS2) to altitude.

I wish him the best of luck, and his safety record must hold some weight with the FAA, but I can't imagine the cost of certification for two new, high risk aircraft. And if they're restricted, or experimental aircraft they (in most circumstances) can't be used for commercial purposes.

It will be neat to see what rolls out of Mojave next!

Great video.

The video is somewhat frightening and yet exciting. On the one hand, cool 'cause I'd love to unbuckle and float. Scary because of the thought of organising 10 other assholes into geting back into their seats before it's 'too late'
