ESA Probe Finds "Skull"-Shaped Formation On Mars

Sat Sep 23, 2006 1:37 am

Images from the famous "face" on Mars at Cydonia taken by the European Space Agency's Mars Express have revealed a geological formation that somewhat resembles a human skull, according to a news report.

The report discounts any theory that the shape is anything but a geological happenstance.

(Excerpt)

Quote:
One of these visible remnant massifs became famous as the 'Face on Mars' in an image taken on 25 July 1976 by the American Viking 1 Orbiter.

A few days later, on 31 July 1976, a NASA press release said the formation "resembles a human head." However, NASA scientists had already correctly interpreted the image as an optical illusion caused by the illumination angle of the Sun, the formation's surface morphology and the resulting shadows, giving the impression of eyes, nose and mouth.

A new "face on Mars" or is this the same old one?

Hell the Rock of Gibraltar looks so much like a certain famous nose that France once tried to acquire the colony and re-name it "DeGaulle Stone"
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

It's the same old one that Richard Hoagland has made a centerpiece of his work.

Couldn't you edit out the ball cap? I'm a Michigan State alum and I find that disgusting, especially after losing to Illinois.  Sad
