Military Presence At PDX?

Thu Oct 12, 2006 2:14 am

This might belong in Military but seeing as PDX is a civilian airport, I'll start here. Mods, move if necessary...

Last night I was sitting on AS#500 to SNA, just short of the runway at PDX. We were holding for ages, even though there was nothing in front of us and nothing approaching. Then suddenly I heard the roar of an engine too loud and wrong pitch to be an airliner. Looked out the window and I saw a fighter jet going like a bat out of hell down the runway. It looked like an F-16, but it was dark and I couldn't tell. It was followed by three more. Once they were all airborne, we taxied on and rolled and off we went.

My question...is there a military presence at PDX? If there is, how big is the operation? If not, any idea what these jets were doing there? Also, are there any other civilian airports in the US that also server military purposes?

It is also quite common to see F/A-18's there too. In fact, one crashed into the Columbia River back in 2004. I was driving along I-84 and saw some of the aftermath.

We have military aircraft come in and out of Grand Junction airport all the time. The US military is not restricted from flying in and out of civilian airports.

There is a ANG base at PDX. The 142nd fighter wing is based there. They fly the F-15A. Their duties are to patrol the skies from the California border up to the Canadian border. They have flown the F-86, F-89, F-94, F-101, F-102, F-4, and now the F-15A. They are supposed to get the F-15C/D as soon as active squadrons start getting the F-22's. They are always two F-15's on alert status.

There was also a reverse unit based at PDX. A KC-135E squadron just left this year. There was a rescue squadron before that. They flew HC-130's and UH-60's Pave hawks.

They just repaved half of the reverse ramp, and upgraded the hangars. As you would know, the Government decided to move the tankers right after the remodel.

Add BOI to that list...they have the 190thFS at Gowen field (adjacent to the airport). They fly the A-10. There's also C-130s as well.
