On those of those pictures, why does the condensation cloud come off the middle, or is that the beginging of the largest cross section?

Yep. That's the top of Stage II. The rocket narrows considerably after that.

I agree, any picture of a Saturn V-B launch is much better than anything else. The S-V is still the most powerful rocket ever built and flown.

Not sure but isn't a fully loaded ENERGIA-rocket (incl.8 boosters) the strongest most powerful rocket ever build and flown?
TOW 4500T
Load into orbit 175T

I am not completely sure as I said before.

I think that Energia is only the biggest by design, not by construction.

The 8-booster version was never built.

It's really a shame that the Saturn V (or even Energia) are not still around. Can you say "ISS to LEO in two lofts?"

I knew you would come through.

I found an interesting set of "Twenty Great Rocket Launches" at http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/...wer.php?imgid=2595&gid=204&index=0 . Image #9 is Apollo 11 late in the first stage burn, where the flame is climbing up the sides of the rocket. I have always thought that was fascinating.

Edit: Image 19 in that sequence is a fascinating one, where the shadow of the Shuttle's exhaust points straight to the rising full moon. Be sure to click to enlarge.

One of my more recent favourites are these two of a Shuttle launch, taken from high altitude. The website says they were taken from the ISS, but im not buying that, the altitude the shot was taken at seems too low for the ISS at around 215 miles.

Then, on the flipside, some stunning images of the results of certain rocket launches.

It was taken from a WB-57 chase plane. The Space Station was a couple of thousand miles away over Newfoundland at the time of launch.

It's hard to beat the Sprint ABM for pure adrenaline during launch. Believe it went supersonic just after clearing the silo, and hypersonic a few seconds after that. The videos of this thing are just amazing. Went so fast that it glowed white-hot.
