Yes, it was built for AA and sold to NASA.

You can still see "American" in this photo.

The aircraft, a 747-123, was purchased by NASA from AA. There is another one, a 747SR-146, purchased from JL.

Yes... that is a American Airlines 747-100 (N905NA) that was purchased by NASA to test Enterprise. It was converted in 1976 but kept the AA paint during testing.

They purchased the second one in 1988. It was a 747-100SR (N911NA) taken from JAL and entered service in 1990 after being modified. The AA one was retired and lives at the Pinal Air Park in AZ now. The other beinig the active carrier and lives at Edwards Air Force Base.

Not sure if i am reading you correct but I took this picture of the AA one (N905NA) last year as she delivered OV-103 to KSC. She was alive and operational in aug. 2005. Did this happen since then?

I think that is just where NASA parks NASA 905 when she's not needed. 905 isn't retired, as far as I know.
