Langley's F-15s

Mon Oct 23, 2006 4:18 am

What unit or units are receiving the F-15C and D aircraft now that the 1st Fighter Wing is well into conversion to the F-22?

I've heard through the rumor mill that the 125th Fighter Wing in Jacksonville, FL will be getting some, as well as some of Kadena's (this part is confirmed). The Langley birds are just scuttlebutt, but could more than likely happen.

Air Forces Monthly's Oct 06 issue reports that Eglin AFB's 33rd is also scheduled to redistribute their 50 F-15C/Ds among active units and the ANG when it transitions to the JSF sometime in 2010, and become the primary USAF training center for the type, - which Navy aviators would also attend.

....great, and subject the Navy pilots to the AF's bs.  Yeah sure Navy and AF pilot culture is oftentimes heterogeneous.

Most of the ANG units have old A model Eagles, so this is a nice upgrade from the oldies- then again, alot of those C's are really beat up, especially Kadena's.

Most are going to other units to fill gaps from losses. Some will go to the bone yard and some will be used for parts. Langley has/had some of the oldest 15's around. When I left, there were at least 3 unflyables that I knew of because of all the parts taken out of them.

Is Kadena scaling down F-15 operations or are they preparing for a new type airplane?

Far from scaling down- if anything they're building up personnel as of the past year or so- it's the closest base to Korea other than what we have in South Korea. They'll be recieving F-22's so these are just some early transfers of their birds. Guard units always get the hand-me-downs.

I hadn't heard they were getting the F-22, though it doesn't surprise me because they were the first to get the F-15C when it was still a very new airplane. How many F-15 squadrons are based at Kadena now? Will all convert to the F-22?

My squadron has been circulating that, as well as some of the folks out in a coupla AFB's out in Texas....for all I know it's scuttlebutt. I'm sure it'll happen, just a question of when- Elmendorf will get theirs first I imagine.

So, will they CV qualify there too?

I think that's for primary JSF flight training only. IMO, the Navy would want to reserve the carrier quals aspect for themselves.
