Croatia Future Fighter Purchase Options?

Thu Oct 26, 2006 5:03 pm

Croatia has laid out its plans for her military for the next 15 years.
Information available on the Ministry of Defence web site.
www.morh.hr also available in English.

Stated, the Mig 21s with be retired by 2011 by which time a new fighter will enter service. Croatia will begin to look for a front line multi roll fighter in 2009.

Q1. Which aircraft do you believe will most suit Croatia requirements and
Q2. Which aircraft do you see defending Croatia in 2011?

I believe it will either be the upgraded F16 a/b or the Saab JAS 39 Gripen.

The Gripen would have to be the favourite with even Johan Lehander, Gripen CEO, identified Croatia as a market they will be targeting to sell the Gripen to.

Aircraft such as the F18 and Mig29 have also been mentioned but are more unlikely.

Well they should've gone after the F-16 MLU's that the Dutch were giving away (and Chile jumped on). That would've been the best deal. Croatia may also want to take a ride out to Davis-Monthan to see if there is anything worthwhile out in the desert (low hour F-16's).

Depending on the price, and if Croatia can piggy back unto USN purchases, the F-18E should be looked at.

I too beleive the Gripen would be the best option. They could get a good leasing deal like the Czechs and Hungarians but....

Politics might get in the way here though. Croatia is also looking at purchasing 130 armed APC for the Army. One of the fav options is made by General Dynamics. There is talk that the two ( F16 and APC) will be purchesed together if a good deal is worked out.

only F-16 and Gripen are seriously under consideration

F-16 might have slight advantage now, especially after recent kiss-ass visit of prime minister to US of A

I'd prefer to see Gripens

and can't wait to see new Mi-17s to arrive to fleet early next year,
good choice, since we already have Mi-8

Maybe it would be something alittle bit more "low-key"?

An armed Hawk or Yak-130?

If both prove to be quite expensive, then.....

or Yak-130?

The Yak-130 or LUS might be a reasonable compromise, as even Russia(?) and Ukraine(?) are adopting it as second echelon fighter - per Oct 2006 Air Forces monthly.

What about Kamov Ka-52 Alligators to partner those?

Two competing designs - although one likely won't see series production.....
