Rcaf Order Status On C-17

Wed Nov 01, 2006 3:13 pm

Hello all, just wondering if the RCAF has finalized and order for the C-17 or if its still only in talks i remeber they were thinking about 3 or 4. I heard that the prodction line is going to come to an end pretty soon. So it would make sense if they take care of this matter quickly as to not end up with out the airplanes.

Cheers Chris

Production was recently extended, and the line will be kept open by the USG for a long time (too many jobs involved). Don't worry.

1st..........Welcome to A.net

2nd...........The afterburners are always on here.

3rd................Boeing is counting them as sold, so even if the final contract has yet to be signed I'd say you can look for C-17s in Canadian colors within a year.

I believe the deal was delayed because of some security concerns that the US government had. They did not want Canadian personnel with duel citizenship or ties to certain countries having access the the C17s detailed technical info. Im not sure if that has been straightened out, but I strongly doubt that the purchase as been but into any serious jeopardy over this.

KrisYYZ is correct. However, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the contract is at risk. If the US and Canada can't reach an agreement on the dual citizen issue, then Canada may be forced to purchase the C-17s through FMS, which would add a lot of $$$ to the bill (IIRC it is 5% for purchase via FMS?). Canada may be really keen to buy C-17s, but as most Canada watchers know, defence dollars are always in short supply and if forced to spend more money than planned on C-17s or buying other new equipment, the C-17s may get chopped. In other words, it's up to the US if they want Canada to buy C-17s or not.

The way the C-17 production line works ("any color you want, as long as it's black") means that the slots are flexible; Thus RCAF should be able to still get airframes in short order. (This is how RAAF is getting their first one so quickly.)

RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) has not existed since 1964. Since that time Canada has had a single military organization known as the CAF (Canadian Armed Forces/Forces Armees Canadien).

Putting aside being pedantic, it will be interesting to see the resolution of this C-17 'security' issue with the US. The CDS, Gen Rick Hillier, is known to be against the acquisiton of the C-17 and in favour of _many_ more C-130J Super Herks. His view is that there is "quality in quantity". I'm sure LockMart would agree.

Hillier lost the political argument to his boss, Defense Minister O'Conner, who in his military career was only a 1-star, and may have been trying to put Hillier in his place.

Of course, you need the pilots to fly the things, and God knows they're short there, too. Latest concept to avoid sending infantry on 2nd tours in Afghanistan is to 'rerole' sailors in infantry. Like that would work. Also, it would effectively homeport the navy as long as we're in Afghanistan, which looks now to be for a long time.

Also related, F-18s being readied for deployment. Around where I live, in the past few weeks, lots of night exercises. An Army friend of mine indicated it was to coordinate with FACs, and the only place I know where there's a lot of night call-ins is Afghanistan.

Stay tuned...

For the record my cousin is a CF-18 Pilot / Instructor in 4W Cold lake, and he said they are being reserved for possible overseas deployment. Therefore if a for fun exercise comes up in Hawaii or Finland or some random spot, these 6 CF-18s will likely be used as regular patrol unless needed. In th news as well It says Canada is reserving 6 NATO Jets for possible deployment. It does not mean fighter pilots are going to be overseas doing night strikes next week Wink . One thing about the Armed Forces, is if its definately going to happen it happens immediately, otherwise prepare yourself for delays and most likely a no. Lets wait and see

Wink ... several weeks ago the Defense Minister indicated 'no way' when it came to CF-18 deployment to Afghanistan. Last week he said "well, maybe".

The public is being prepared for further mission creep.

No offense, but nothing happens immediately in any Armed Force. S**t always takes forever to make a decision.  Silly

if something is going to happen and its necessary it happens IMMEDIATELY. However if it is something that would be nice...... then no , it takes forever
