USAF Settles With N.J. Elementary School Accidentally Strafed by F-16

Wednesday, November 01, 2006

LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J. — The Air Force will pay more than $500,000 to an Ocean County elementary school that was mistakenly shot by an F-16 on a training maneuver two years ago.

Under a settlement announced Wednesday, the Air Force will pay $519,070 in compensation to the Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School. The building was damaged by 27 rounds of inert 20mm ammunition from an air cannon mounted on the plane during a Nov. 3, 2004 nighttime mission over the New Jersey Pinelands.

The military blamed the pilot for the accident, but also said poorly designed controls in the F-16 played a role.

"The Air Force has done the right thing," said state Rep. Jim Saxton. "Their agreement goes a long way towards repairing the actual damages to the school building as well as keeping their relationship with the community healthy."

School officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.

No one was injured in the mishap, which rattled the southern Ocean County region surrounding the Warren Grove Gunnery Range. Eight of the 2-inch lead rounds punched through the school's roof, knocking down ceiling tiles.

At least one round struck a child's desk, and others scuffed the asphalt in the parking lot. The rounds explode on impact when they are live.

Anyone familiar with the F-16 know how "poorly designed controls" could contribute to the accidental shooting of a school?

I don't know but I do remember when this story broke and all the administrators where concerned that the kids might be "Scared" because of what happened, in particular with that desk that got split in two.

If it happened to my desk when I was a kid scared wouldn't have been my reaction....more on the order of COOOOLLLLLL!!!!

Ah...NJ school administrators. They'll no doubt have that money spent in no time. Here in NJ the teacher's union is the most powerful lobby around, making the education "industry" pretty expensive. Our local high school has a principal, three vice principals, and two people with the title of Dean of Students. That's probably about $750,000 in salaries and benefits for those six bureaucrats. Please tell me it ain't like that in Alaska!

I appreciate much of the US population have not taken the metric system to heart, especially the media but I am reasonably confident the students of Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School, as "traumatised" as they may be, could explain the difference between 20mm and 2-inch.

Cheers

Maybe that was the thing with "poorly designed controls"? They might not have upgraded the controls when they installed the 50mmm gun on the plane Big grin

I go to a NJ Catholic High School for a reason  Wink . I remember over the summer, going to my cousin's graduation in Georgia, and the special guest being the superintendent. There was only one for the entire county. It's quite sad that I find such a fact that amazing.

The school must have good laywers. IIRC, this incident happened during a night time exercise. There was really no danger to the kids since they were all home. I would think the events involving school shooting where fellow classmates are holding the guns would be more traumatic. Did the USAF really need to pay over half a million dollars to repair the roof, replace the ceiling tiles, resurface the parking lot and buy a new desk?

Nuh..checked that, length is 2.98 inches.
I guess a dumb media hack, conditioned to thinking $2.99 is not $3.00 would consider it 2 inches
Media rounding .98 down is as bad/stupid as confusing 20mm with 2in.

cheers

Yet your family still has to pay their property taxes to cover public education. Big joke this week is the Teachers Convention in Atlantic City on Thursday and Friday. Curious it can't occur in the summer or on a weekend, and not that many attend. Mini vacations for many, and to add an aviation theme to this post, many sneak away to Orlando with the kiddies who are also
off during the convention.

The trigger for the cannon system is also the trigger for the laser system depending on the position of a switch. If you try to use the range finder with the switch in the wrong system you get a little surprise.

The range at Warren Grove, NJ, where during my first 2 years in the serivce I sometimes got stuck helping the Range Officer with coordinating movement with ATC, has been around long before any school or nearby subdivisions. While there is no doubt that the pilot blew it, maybe the school authorities should take a deep long look at themselves for building a school near a gunnery range (btw, no HE is ever used at Warren Grove, only practice bombs and training rounds for the guns).
