Has the C17 ever been a color other than the Solid Gray

here's a link to a 1/72 C17 kit coming out.

The USAF adopted the medium gray color for all of it's tankers and transports in the late 1980s. It does make the aircraft harder to see, visually, at altitude under most light conditions. At some airports, it also makes it more difficult to see on the ramp, from above.

One was painted in UPS colors briefly for hauling Keika, the whale from Free Willy.

I want to say the prototype (T-1) had the european 1 scheme when it rolled out. I can't find an online pix at the moment to support that though.

Found this one

looks like it is still in testing with the nose cone.

was the color left alone when it went into service, and it looks like that the base color may be the gray that others are painted?

T-1 never went into service, it's still a test bird at Edwards. Looks like it got repainted into the same grey scheme as the rest of the fleet though.

Even the FMS C-17s have the same paint scheme.

I remember seeing advertising (read Photoshop) from Boeing when they were trying to sell the BC-17X to the commercial cargo companies. It was in the former company colors (glad those are gone). Found this.

Also found a desktop model.

I think F4wso is smokin' dope.. Smile Very unlikely that USAF would have allowed one of their C-17s to be painted in UPS colors. Aside from which when that aircraft landed , with Keiko (not Keika) still aboard, they broke the gear and closed the runway for several days -- UPS would have been very unhappy with that kind advertising. My guys were TDY with the aircraft.

The FMS C-17s are all US specs, which is why they take delivery so quickly and so relatively cheap. With the RAF lease/purchase deal there was also the possibility that their aircraft would return to the US fleet and so needed to be to a similar spec.

Found this.

Hope it's Photoshopped, those guys would be nuts to be out on the ramp in weather like that.

UPS painted a C-130 that they wet leased to transport Keiko from Mexico to Oregon.

ONP only has a 5,398ft runway. I wish I was there to see the C-17 land and take off.
