YF-23 At LA AFB

Fri Dec 29, 2006 10:16 am

So I was driving from the BX on the base over to the In n out at LAX today and looking at the plant there (Northrop-Grumman and I was told major F-18 assembly is there, anyone verify that?). And right as I was getting to the end of the complex I saw an F-23 sitting next to one of the buildings. So just thought I'd let everyone know if you wanted to go try and get some kind of picture of one. They also have an F-14, F-18, and T-38 sitting just inside the fence along the road. Also, anyone have any ideas on why it would be there? Not to mention there isn't even a runway for it to fly in on.

Where are you talking about~ What road were you on? I'm trying to picture where you were, but I am coming up blank. Were you near the Museum at the East end of the Southern LAX runways?

The last time I was up near the 'plant' at Hawthone- I saw lots of neat stuff at the museum there- in the NW corner of that airport...

NG only builds the F/A-18's forward fuselage. The forward fuselage is then shipped to Mc Boeing in St. Louis for final assembly.

One of the two F-23 prototypes is on display at the Western Museum of Flight in Torrance, California. The second is stored at Edwards AFB.

Apologies, NG builds the 'AFT' fuselage not the forward fuselage.

I believe that there is one of the YF-23's in the restoration shops at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. If you take a behind the scenes tour, you would see it and the other restoration projects in progress at the museum.
The tours are held on Friday afternoons and you can schedule your self in advance. There are restrictions on bags and the age and numbers of young people.

It sucks when the better aircraft loses.

I was driving north on N. Douglas St. from the Air Force base towards LAX. It was sitting with the buildings at the north end of the plant around where Atwood Way intersects Douglas. Thats also where the other 3 aircraft were sitting, but just inside the fence right next to the road. I'm also unaware of any museum in that immediate area.

The 2nd one is at the Air Force Museum awaiting restoration ... and I don't know when that project is supposed to be started.

I thought that refurbishment had been completed and the YF-23 was back at the Western Museum of Flight. I believe the information you have is old.

Yes, on the website it says:

"Last Update on Mar. 7, 2005" and "on loan, will be back on display in June 2006".
Exceptions confirm the rule.

But if the bird is at the location described at the begining of this post- it's about five miles away from Torrance- the new home of the Museum...
In the next several months I'll be making a trip up that way~ I'll poke around and see what I can find out, if someone up in LA doesn't beat me to it!!!

As Studedave said, the info on the site may be old. But I personally saw the bird there on thursday. So it's there. Unless it is another bird that does not belong to the museum at Hawthorne (now Torrance). And just to make it clear again, the aircraft is at the Nothrop-Grumman PLANT next to L.A. AFB about a 5 min WALK from LAX.
