I was reading about that - does that mean the entire next class will named after Ford?!

I agree that President Ford needs a ship named after him but calling the entire new class of carrier after the name "Ford" tends to make this Chevy fan's face cringe!

Naming an aircraft carrier after Ford??? Come on, I know he just died, but he really wasn't a great president. Nice guy and everything, but not a memorable president. He fell down some stairs and pardoned Nixon, thats about it.

So who's next in line to get an aircraft carrier named after them, Grant, Taft, Taylor, Tyler, Fillmore, Hayes?

How about William Henry Harrison?

Norcal.....Are you aware that Ford served on a US Navy Carrier during WWII.

As did G.H. Bush, who also has a carrier named after him and Jimmy Carter has a Nuclear Submarine named after him-oddly enough he was Submariner when he was in the Navy.

Yes, that means that there will be possibly as many as eleven aircraft carriers in the Gerald R. Ford class of supercarriers.

General Dodge was in charge of building the first coast-to-coast railroad of the USA. Bet that he could walk in a straight line and chew on something tough at the same time.

I was also surprised to hear of the naming of a submarine after ex-Prasident Carter. Isn´t he still alive?

Wonder if there ever will be a U.S.S. Bill Clinton.

Do you remember the Simpsons episode "Bart vs. Australia" where the Simpsons were flown out of the U.S. embassy and Bart asks if they were brought to an aircraft carrier and the pilot answers:"No, the closest ship is the U.S.S. Walther Mondale, it is a laundry ship."

Jimmy Carter should have a garbage scow named after him, not a submarine (although he goes around torpedoing the US everywhere-maybe Al Queda should get a submarine and name it after him.)

That honor is reserved for Clinton  Wink

Anyways he will never get a ship named for him. The recent carrier namings...

Reagan
Bush Sr.
and Ford

either served in the Navy or contributed greatly to it, Clinton did none of that. Anyways its up to the department of the Navy to choose names for ships, not congress.

No. The entire Clinton class was obsolete before the keel was laid. (so to speak) It was learned that the Soviet "Monica" class could simply attach themselves by vacuum and suck out all the seamen.

Correct but in order for one to be Captain of an aircraft carrier that person must have been a Naval Aviator - G.H. Bush is perfectly suited as well as any who have an aircraft carrier named after them. While Ford did serve on a carrier, he was still only a surface officer and would have been perhaps more appropriately had his name on the next cruiser or destroyer class, if even any class at all.

Carter may have been an less than lusterious President as well but he was a 1947 Naval Academy grad who volunteered and actually served on submarines and even contributed to some of the first atomic powered submarines under Admiral Rickover via the USS Seawolf, SSN-575. He may have been President during a less than stellar period in our Nation's histroy, but Carter's name to the last Seawolf class vessel constructed is of course well deserved.

I believe Carter was selected as the 1st commander of Seawolf (a star-crossed sub if there ever was one - that didn't sink, that is) but resigned from the navy after the death of his father in order to run the family business. Whatever you may think of his term as Prez, he was far and away the most technically competent president of the 20th century.

Factoid: Carter came to where I now work, Chalk River Labs, in 1952, to help in the clean up after the NRX reactor partial meltdown. That took some guts, since no one really knew how to do it at the time. I believe he was here for about six weeks or so.

Of the latest Presidents I don´t think we will never see a U.S.S. Nixon, Clinton or G.W.Bush. Maybe we see a U.S.S. H. Clinton in a few years  duck

Anyway I think it is a nice gesture to name a carrier after President Ford he may not be the greatest President but he took office in a difficult time and served the US well.

One of the reasons for the respect shown former President Ford is that he held to the custom that former presidents keep their opinions to themselves and don't run around the world interjecting themselves into US foreign policy matters which are properly the province of whatever administration is currently in power (and State Department).

Carter's vacillation and hand wringing during the 444 day Iranian hostage crisis presented the image of a weak US. Funny how the Iranians hastily concluded the episode when Reagan took office - they knew he wouldn't tolerate such nonsense. BTW, let me offer a "Thank you Canada" once again for your help during those dark days.

There was alot of debate over the naming of this new boat. Alot of folks thought it should have been named the America, since we no longer have an America in existance- CV-66 was decommed in 96 and was sunk recently. Something about having an America or a United States showing up off your shore says something- personally I think having a bunch of ships named after presidents doesn't do as much. Ford was a good man, but he didn't contribute to the Navy in the ways others have- I'd personally like to see a USS John McCain- now there's a Naval Aviator.

I am not a huge fan of naming stuff after politicians, especially living (or recently deceased ones for that matter). This goes doubly so far warships. Just b/c you were a politician and a low or mid-level officer in the navy doesn't necessarily get you the rights to have a ship named after you.

I would still like to see a return to proper names for a carrier. Another America or United States would be nice, as well as Saratoga, Lexington, Essex, Constellation... the list goes on. Certainly naming a new carrier after a previous carrier that had an honorable career would be fitting. I would at least hope that there will be another Enterprise in the new class of CVNs.

I'm a little surprised to see this, and would have thought that we were past the political naming of vessels, but I guess not. We need a new Saratoga, Lexington and Yorktown (now that the cruiser is out of service). We could do with another Midway, Ranger and Independence. Stop naming the vessels for presidents of recent history, at least for a little while. Wait until there is another Eisenhower or Reagan. Yeah....except for the recent letter he wrote to the BRAC persuading key members to stop the Navy from sending the sub school to an actual in use naval sub base where the cost of living is much lower, the cost of construction for needed improvements is much lower, and the presence of actual submarines makes it a more logical placement. He did it for pure sentimental reasons rather than logical ones, and it seems to follow his recent years decision making starting with the activity with North Korea....or even as far back as Panama.

Yeah, he could be an AO, just going around and "servicing" anyone. If Hillery ever gets elected (heven forbid), they could name a new class of harbor tugs after her.

I was hoping the would name the new CVN(X) the Halsey class, after Adm Bull (haul ass) Halsey. Name the second ship after LtGen Patton, and the 3rd ship after Gen Curt LeMay.

No, do not name a ship after MacArthur, and Eik already has a CVN named for him.

You'd have to decommission or rename USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) for that to occur. It's a fairly new boat, and is named for the Senator's grandfather.

Carter believed in negotiating before firing the guns, unlike Ronnie Raygun. And as for Iran concluding the episode _the day after_ Reagan took office, it was because RR was conducting his own foreign policy behind the govenrment's back, negotiating with the Iranians -- which I believe is a federal crime in the US.

I am so tired of that "Thank you Canada" thing. Let's all move on.

Eloquently described, eloquently.  Wink

Let's see, broken family, Rhodes scholar (oh, BTW, did _you_ get one?),
law school, governor at, I believe 28, loses governorship, gets it back,
ascends to presidency, gets re-elected. Not bad for a 'moron'.

Yes, the man has many faults. Monica-gate was a _private_ failing, it
had nothing to do with governance. The GOP turned it into a witch hunt.

But the US did get back a semblance of fiscal responsibility, several years of balanced/surplus budgets (unlike the compassionate conservative now in office and also RR previously). Mostly stayed out of foreign adventures, although Kosovo/Serbia was an exception.

People around the world _listened_ to the United States then, in part because the man is intelligent (again I make a comparison to ...). I know a federal politician in Winnipeg who was the equivalent of SecTreas in the previous government. Knows Clinton, likes him, says he's flat-out the smartest person he's ever met.

Yeah, he could be an AO, just going around and "servicing" anyone. If Hillery ever gets elected (heven forbid), they could name a new class of harbor tugs after her.

That's low. She's smart and tough -- has to be to hang in with Bill's pecadillos. Might win, too, and might very well surprise you.

Actually I personally think that Clinton was a very good president and if it were to me I would name a ship after him.

Thats easy to say, we you didn't have to live in the US when this moron was at the helm.

It had better not be named the Dubya, though. If it was, it would just keep steaming straight ahead, even after it hit the rocks.

George W. Bush is a great man, and I'd be willing to guess that if canada was in trouble he would help you guys out. Or maybe we could leave that to the mounties, I'm sure they could handle it........

I think this is going to be too much off-topic but please give me a reason why Clinton was so bad. The economy was blooming and the US was well respected in the world so I would say he did a good job in domestic and foreign policy.

Quoting DeltaGuy (Reply 22):
He was a fucking moron of a President, personally. He did no favors for the military other than decimate it and place our national security last over welfare a

In the early and mid 90s all countries reduced their militaries because after the end of the cold war there was simply no need for a large army so decimating the military was the right thing to do. It was not that Clinton abolished the military and what is so wrong in putting money into welfare ?

?? You're joking, right? I'd describe him more like DeltaGuy describes Clinton.
If he were to help Canada (not that I think that's a given) someone would have to point it out on a map for him.

I'd like to know the real truth about his apparent or seeming 'absences' from required ANG duty. If Clinton gets no respect for never having served, how come Bush skates regarding possible AWOLs? There's been over theyears a big effort to bury this. The US and the world would be better off had he remained Texas' most obnoxious party drunk.

And what is the deal with 'having been in uniform' anyway? Does it make you better, somehow? I've toiled, and hard, for my government for 32 years now. I've represented Canada abroad on occasion. The fact that on some Fridays in the summer I wear shorts and sandals to work invalidates this somehow?

I think it is interesting to note the difference between Americans and Non-American responses to Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. To a lot of American's these are two presidents who cared more about doing for other countries and their interest rather than the American interest. Ronald Reagan and Bush Jr. - more than Sr - are more focused on what is in America's interest.

Europeans loved Carter and Clinton's foreign policy, they basically went along with or agreed with the European model. Even Clinton stuck to that plan in Bosnia until Newsweek and other media outlets in the US started writing articles about the tragedy there. On a side note, he is to be commended for taking military action without the sanction of the UN, something for which GB Jr is now villified, unless my memory fails me, the bombing campaign started out without UN approval.

It would be nice to get away from naming ships for politicians but it will never happen because without the politicians the ships don't get built.

Agreed. He never served so he don't get no respect. He gets denigrated at every opportunity.

Not only did he not served, he doged a draft, sending another poor soul out to do his job.

Not to mention he decimated a military on top of that. I'm glad you're a Canadian and can't vote here in the US.

Quoting T773ER (Reply 33):

You bet. Bush does have the balls to call a spade a spade, and also the ability to help out where it's needed. But when we need help....the room gets awfly thin.

I understand downsizing after the cold war, but the way Clinton went about it was downright wrong and unsafe. IMHO his reduction of our defense budget, and his piss-poor handling of matters in the middle east lead to the things Bush has to deal with now. Servicemen died because Clinton was too worried about getting sucked off rather than ensuring the military got the money they needed.

That's 'cuz the Democratic theme is closest to Socialism- of course they like it.

Anyways...political spin aside. I suppose another John McCain, named for the son and A-4 pilot, would be appropriate. Better than a Ford if you ask me.

Can't wait to see the jokes & patches about coming aboard a "Ford".

Very few people are willing to recognize the looming danger in front of us-namely radical Islam. Europe as a whole (with the single exception of Tony Blair) would rather bury their heads in the sand and ignore the situation, just as they (and we) did in the 1930's. But if not faced soon the result will be worse than it was then, because there will be nuclear weapons used, and no one will be spared. I really do fear an ideology that says agree with me or God directs me to kill you. Thank God Bush is willing to face the situation, but will this country continue to back him?

Well, to start off with the middle class was paying close to 40% in taxes, but I guess compared to you socialist thats still pretty good.

Unemployment was at 5.6% through most of his presidency too. But thats noting compared top the 10% you guys deal with, right now were at 4.5%.

clinton also signed NAFTA, which is doing the exact opposite it was supposed to do and bring jobs to the US. Instead It's draining jobs out of the US.

Last time I checked the DOW was up to 14000, a record level under BUSH.

Why don't you look at who likes clinton on this thread, not to many people from The US. That's because clinton did the rest of the world a favor by cutting defense spending. But with BUSH in POWER, that has all changed.

And please don't tell me how good he was, we you didn't have to live with this guy. You don't now what kind of screw up this guy was, and he tarnished the Presidents office with his affair with Monica. Only to which BUSH has restored it.

I believe Bush did more harm to the Presidents office than Clinton did with his affair but we don´t have to discuss this lets say we agree to disagree.
Besides maybe I did not have to live with Clinton but half my family is from the States and I have many American friends so I have a little insight from what is going on over there.
I always love being in the States because Americans usually have a very friendly and open way and with Bush being in office the reputation of Americans abroad took some serious damage which I think it is a real pity because the way many Europeans see Americans now is not true from the experience I have.

Nope, but thanks for playing. NAFTA was to permit free trade between all three North American countries and let THE MARKET decide. Gee, what a Republican idea !

And, by the way, the gold old USA has broken NAFTA over softwood lumber imports from Canada. And has lost all 8 arbitration rulings on such, including, in one case, where all three members of the tribunal were American !!! The US government (Republican) has thumbed its' nose at an international agreement it signed. How seriously can they be taken in the future ?

But I digress from Military Av & Space.

And yet, we did a lot of medivacs out of Canada of Americans who needed to stay in hospital but they (the canucks) wanted to move them out as soon as emergency care to stablize them where performed.

Wonder if there ever will be a U.S.S. Bill Clinton.

I witnessed, first hand, what he did to the military...I hope not. He was not a fan of the military and made his feelings well known.

This is way off topic, but I find it interesting that people from countries that have "socialism" tendencies or ideals (Germany and Canada) view Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter as a good Presidents.
