What Ever Happed To The IL-106

Tue Jan 23, 2007 7:21 am

The IL-106 was a wide body replacement for the IL76. It was designed in the 90's, but nothing ever came from it. So what happened to the IL-106

OK, you found your Soviet equivalent to the C-17, although the Il-106 was to have had propfans.

It's just an unbuilt design, though, like there are so many in the drawers of manufacturers in all countries. Like people tried to explain to you in the other thread, there was little reason really to produce a direct counterpart to the C-17, and with the dire economic situation in Russia in the 1990s, it's even less surprising that it never came even close to being built.

This old article described the conditions obtaining at the time (with a passing mention of the Il-106) which made for a very unfavorable manufacturing environment.....
