Video Of C-130 Flying Through Thunderstorm

Fri Jan 26, 2007 7:00 pm

I came across the following video of what appears to be a C-130, fully loaded, flying through a thunderstorm formation in Iraq. The video is taken from the perspective of the flightdeck and depicts severe turbulence, lightning, and electrification of the exterior of the aircraft.

My mistake. The moderators should please feel free to correct the title to read, "Video Of KC-135 Flying Through Thunderstorm".

I had never seen video of the St. Elmo's fire. I guess all the pictures of it are time lapse because they would always show the entire windshield covered in it. So yah, interesting to finally see that it is just instantaneous flashes.

Just out of curiosity, what made you think it was a C-130?

Typo or just a identification mistake. I've done it too.

Example, I called the B-52 the B-2 and the B-1 the B-17, all in the same day. (Yes, I was retarded that day, lack of coffee.)  tongue

Then why didn't he call it the "KC-130"?

Whatev' it's really not important.

UH, the reason that I misidentified the aircraft was a rather stupid one, but it didn't have to do with a typographical error. It was simply that I saw that the aircraft windows seemed to include several other than the standard ones that one sees in the most modern aircraft. Hence, I automatically assumed that the aircraft was a C-130. However, I did not realize that the additional windows above those at eye-level were actually "eyebrow" windows that were present in KC-135's. It was an elementary error on my part and I should have checked my facts before going with my assumption.

Jake, I wish I could say it was a simple typo, but it was much dumber than that on my part. UH is right -- if it had been a typo, I would have written something akin to KC-130, not C-130.

Thanks to both of you for your interest in this thread.

Just curious but is there any greater risk with flying a tanker like a KC-135 through or near thundercells as opposed to a straight transport aircraft?
