F-22A Vs F-14 Which One Sound Better?

Tue Feb 13, 2007 1:33 am

A lot of people say that the F-22A is extremely loud, and I have to agree that, the F-22A can be very hard on the ears. Even though I saw two F-14 pass by NAS Norfolk (the only time saw a F-14 fly in person), I do not know how one sound in full power ( in person of course). I herd the F-14 was one of the loudest fighters built, and I wanted to compare it to another extremely loud fighter the F-22A. So which one sound better?

Find some Tomcat drivers and ask how they did against an F-22 flying out Langley over the Atlantic? I bet the Tomcat guy says he was impressed an humbled. It is not even an contest against the Rhino's.

Ask those of us who were at the airshow at Nellis AFB and see which was better.

The AF and their shiney new toy were too afraid of scratching it up, gave a pussy performance at best.

The Navy and their not-to-be-outdone Tomcat wiped the floor with the Raptor's ass.

It was one of the few times I was almost embarrased of my choice of service branch  Wink

No Raptor demo's have been approved. Won't see that till '08. I would have thought you'd known that being Air Force. As for the thread topic, the Raptor is louder than the Tommy but not by much...Check

Take heart it seems like that for any USAF air performance, I think the first thing that senior leadership does when they select a demo pilot is have him castrated, the Navy just tells him not to embarass us. The T birds got to be the most boring show for Military demo team.

I knew that there was no approved routine, so I knew from the get-go that we wouldn't be getting much for the money.

No kidding....they put them up against the Blues at a show at Patrick AFB, and the same thing happened. They shouldn't set them up like that!  Wink

Both the Tbirds and the Raptors are incredibly capable aircraft, as are their pilots. Only thing is, the AF gives you that *short* list of approved manuevers, and that's it. And, like Venus said, the Navy just says don't embarass us...meaning, give the taxpayers something for their money.

Of course that could by why the Navy has a lot more crashes/accidents...But IMO the Superbug demo is #1 until we see the Raptor open up a bit more...Check

That's becasue the nature of Navy operations are more hazordous than Air Force operations.

Were talking about at airshows...I'd say there's an equal hazard there wouldn't you?...Check

Don't know if you guys are still reading, but..
I used to drive Tomcats, and actually flew some 2v2 against the Langley Raptors off the coast of North Carolina. Pains me to admit that they were eye-watering. Stealthy (although we weren't helped much by our fickle APG-71.) And the supercruise thing up at FL 500 is impressive. We weren't unfortunately using our AIM-54's by this time, it would've been interesting to see how they could have done with working radar. We had a good time, except that the Air Force training rules are so restrictive that we weren't allowed to mix it up in a dogfight, they just wanted to do the intercept and knock it off..I guess their toy is too expensive..I imagine this is the same conservative mindset they use with airshow demos. Safe, but not as fun to watch.

As for noise, I'm pretty sure the Raptor is much noisier. The Tomcats were pretty quiet, although it was hard to get an accurate comparison since during cat shots we were restricted to Mil power when the Hornet could use full AB depending on their weight. Our AB was too hot for the jet blast deflectors, and the thrust wasn't needed to get airborne (and why waste the gas?)

Airborne, Hornets were much louder because they operated much higher in the power than we did (smaller engines, stubby wings.) Never got to see the F-22 run up on deck in full AB, I'm sure it would've been unpleasant.

Or...ref the Raptor in the superbug's crosshairs...they don't wan't to risk a collision with guys/girls that break the rules in training. Dozer seemed to imply that the incident I referenced put a bad taste in the AF mouth.

The F-22 might be new but take the Raptor into the danger zone with the Tomcat and it will get bit in the end. The TOMCAT doesn't settle for second place...
