Transall C-160 Perfomance

Tue Feb 13, 2007 1:42 am

Today as I was going to work I saw a Marine KC-130J and a German AF C-160 on the transient ramp next to each other . I was shocked to see how similar they were in size. I thought the C-160 was much smaller, on the order of the C-27 Spartan.

This leads me to my question. How is the performance of the C-160 compared to the non J model C-130s? I know there is another thread asking which one would you choose, C-160 or C-130, but I'm not asking that. I'm just asking how it performs.

It has a maximum load of 16 (metric) tons, but high loads on a C-160 eat into the range to a max greater extent than on a C-130. It also a little slower and has shorter range in general. It's important to bear in mind for what it was made for: A battlefield transporter for Germany and France during the cold war. So having less than 1000km range with full load was just fine.
