Why The Military Use So Many 747?

Thu Feb 15, 2007 7:26 am

I notice that the military charter a lot of 747 to haul there cargo, and my question is why? Are the 747 use for cargo that a to big for a C-17 to haul but not big enough to use a C-5? Do not get me wrong, I love seeing my favorite plane at NAS Norfolk, but I am just wondering if they are use as a stop gage between C-17 and C-5.

The 747 freight charters frequently seen at AMC air terminals are generally running "channel" missions. These are regular runs for routine cargo, usually this cargo is palletized but it is possible to put rolling stock aboard if 463L pallets are used as a subfloor.

These charters are not a substitute for a C-17 or C-5 rather they relieve military aircraft of routine runs and provide an incentive for air carriers to participate in CRAF.
